1973 Constitution protects democracy, democratic institutions: Raza Rabbani

ISLAMABAD:  The Constitution passed on April 10, 1973 could not be derailed, though it was partially suspended and part of it were held in abeyance as military dictators knew that reaching such consensus document is not possible again, said Mian Raza Rabbani, former Chairman Senate.

“On the 10th April,1973, the Constitution, 1973, was passed by the elected representatives of Pakistan. A document passed unanimously by political parties and the federating units”, the senor leader of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) said in a statement issued here On Friday.

Previous Senate had decided to observe this day (April 10) as Constitution Day, he said, adding that this is a document that no derailment of the democratic process has been able to abrogate but has suspended parts of it or kept it kept it in abeyance because they knew that now such a national consensus can not be achieved.

The 18th Amendment added to the sprit of the Constitution. Pakistan as a federation can only survive under the 1973 Constitution, former Chairman Senate said.

The instructions functioning under the Construction need to be strengthened, he said, adding that in the Virus crisis the Govt should have used the Constitution and the institutions functioning under it, to build a national consensus.

The salvation of the federation lies in the democratic process, rule of law and the Constitution, Rabbani said.
