SRINAGAR: The gunfight began late Tuesday evening after a joint team of Indian occupational forces laid a siege in Melhora village of Zainapora Sub division of South Kashmir’s Shopian district.
A police officer said that the operation was launched following inputs about the presence of some rebels.
He said that the exchange of fire took place in the area soon after the joint team fired some warning shots towards the suspected spot.
The spokesperson confirmed killings of four militants in the encounter. The police official claimed that these youth were militants and were killed in an encounter.
“This operation based on a credible police input was launched Tuesday evening. Four militants have been reportedly killed,” the spokesperson said.
The holed up rebels were given chance to surrender, however, they opened indiscriminate fire which was duly retaliated, he said, adding that all of the four militants were killed and operation is now over.
The slain militants have been identified as Uzair Ahmad, a resident of Chesti Colony Baramulla; Basharat Ahmad, a resident of Nikloora village in Pulwama; Wakeel Ahmad Dar, a resident of Nikloora Pulwama and Tariq Ahmad Bhat a resident of Khassipora village in Shopian.
Police further stated, “arms and ammunition along with other indiscriminate material was recovered from the spot of encounter, people are advised not to visit the encounter site as there may be any unexploded explosives at the spot where firefight happened.”
Meanwhile, 2G mobile internet services were also snapped in Shopian district late Tuesday evening soon after the gunfight commenced.
During the covid-19, the encounters and operation in residential areas have irked the local population and people are fearing the spread of coronavirus due to movement of Indian security forces.
India is continuously suppressing the freedom of expression in Indian occupied territory of Jammu and Kashmir booking another leading journalist Gowhar Geelani after booking female journalist under unlawful activities.
The police in their statement said that “Gowhar Geelani is indulging in unlawful activities through his posts and writings on Social Media platform which are prejudicial to the national integrity, sovereignty and security of India.”
This is the third incident in last 4 days that Indian authorities have booked Kashmiri journalists for expressing their views on social media platforms.
