Sleeping pills…Right cure of depression?

As a clinical psychiatrist I notice many people with mental disabilities daily, but it is the dilemma of our society that most of them don’t visit a doctor. As a matter of fact the family would take them bit different, abnormal and society will treat them differently if they visit some consultant.

Friends of these ‘patients’ wouldn’t like to spend time with them because they don’t have courage to face the reality their friends are in and that they have some mental issues. To precise, I would like to talk about a teen aged girl who came to my clinic for consultation; she was biting her nails and looking in miserable condition. Her father told me that she attempted suicide also.

During the session, I came to know that she had a boyfriend on social media, she loved him so much but after few months, she faced break up and started taking sleeping pills. Now-a-days depression can be more harmful than any other psychical disease. There are so many factors that can lead to the disorder.

Around 90 percent of our youth is unemployed, when they are free they get involved in social media activities, mobile phones are seen even in hands of 3 years old. If we expect from this generation to behave soberly it would be nothing but an illusion. Parents are busy in parties while indifferent to the activities of their children. Media plays a vital role for providing education and information.

It should be a source of entertainment but unfortunately some TV programs and social media has adverse effect on the minds of children. Generation of ours is getting influenced by disinformation. In the absence of proper sex education, children get knowledge from
their friends and internet and they fall victim to half-cooked sex stories.

Use of alcohol and smoking also causes depression among the youth though people use it as a remedy of depression. In Pakistan, sleeping pills are mostly used in tribal areas and FATA as they are affected areas in war on terror. The residents of these areas are suffering from fear and mental disorders.

Addiction to sleeping pills has numerous side effects as heart disease, cancer, ulcer, obesity, depression and hypertension. The persons suffering from depression must not feel shy to visit psychiatrist and encourage others as well to get medical treatment.

Mental health centers should be built equipped with latest technology and psycho experts from government and private sector. Avoid tension and face difficulties of life bravely.
