President Zardari, Emir of Qatar pledge to deepen bilateral ties

DOHA: President Asif Ali Zardari met Emir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani in Doha on Wednesday, where the two leaders reaffirmed their resolve to further strengthen the historic and brotherly relations between Pakistan and Qatar.

An official statement said the Emir of Qatar expressed admiration for Pakistan’s progress and achievements. He also lauded the contributions of the Pakistani community in Qatar and conveyed his intention to substantially increase their presence in the country.

President Zardari conveyed greetings and best wishes from the government and people of Pakistan to the Emir, and lauded Qatar’s progress and Sheikh Tamim’s visionary leadership.

During the meeting, Sheikh Tamim described the Pakistan–Saudi Arabia defence agreement as a positive and timely development.

He noted that Pakistan holds a unique position as a country that maintains relations with China, the West, and Gulf nations simultaneously.

President Zardari proposed enhanced cooperation between Pakistan and Qatar in defence, defence production, agriculture, and food security.

The Emir welcomed the proposal and directed relevant officials to initiate immediate consultations.

President Zardari also commended Qatar’s hosting of the Doha talks and its constructive role regarding Afghanistan.

The Qatari Emir expressed hope that Pakistan and Afghanistan would resolve existing issues and move beyond current challenges.

At the invitation of President Zardari, Sheikh Tamim accepted and announced his intention to visit Pakistan early next year.

PPP’s Chairperson Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and Pakistan’s Ambassador to Qatar were also present during the meeting.
