Pakistan condemns Houthi attack on power station serving prophet’s mosque

ISLAMABAD: Islamabad on Friday strongly condemned an attack by the Houthi militia on the Taibah power distribution station in Madinah on September 29, stating the “reprehensible attack” on civilian infrastructure supplying electricity to the Holy Prophet’s (PBUH) Mosque was a “grave provocation” and a threat to regional peace and security.

In a statement, the Foreign Office (FO) said the attack targeted civilian infrastructure supplying electricity to the Holy Prophet’s (PBUH) Mosque.

It said that the sanctity of the Two Holy Mosques and the safety of worshippers and pilgrims must be respected under all circumstances.

The statement further stated that the Pakistan reaffirmed its “unwavering solidarity” with the brotherly Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and expressed its full support for the kingdom’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and security.

The ministry said: “We stand firmly with Saudi Arabia in its efforts to safeguard the Two Holy Mosques, protect its people and ensure the safety of pilgrims.

The statement comes as Yemen’s Saudi-led coalition accused the group of striking an electricity distribution station in Madina, which provided power to the Prophet’s (PBUH) Mosque. However, the Houthis have denied the accusation.

Also, the Saudi-led coalition fighting Yemen’s Houthis, saying the group had attacked a power distribution station in Madinah earlier in the week, putting one transformer out of service but without affecting the electricity network.

The coalition said an investigation and examination of drone wreckage had confirmed Houthi involvement in planning and carrying out Tuesday’s attack.

Coalition spokesman Maj Gen Turki al-Maliki said the attack had targeted the Taibah electricity distribution station at 5:11am local time on Tuesday.
