Ukrainian Drones hit Russian data centre

Ukrainian drones hit Russia's biggest data centre

MOSCOW: A drone struck a data centre belonging to Russia’s largest bank, Sberbank, in the southern city of Balakovo, a company executive said on Wednesday.

The strike in the Saratov region on the Volga River followed three attacks in the past week on data centres owned by Russian tech group Yandex. Ukraine says it is responding to Russian attacks on its own data sites.

“We confirm the attack on the data centre,” Sberbank’s deputy chairman Alexander Vedyakhin was quoted as saying by the TASS state-owned news agency, which said the data centre was in the southern city of Balakovo.

He added all Sberbank systems and services are operating normally.

Roman Busargin, governor of the region where Balakovo is located, said a Ukrainian drone strike had killed one person early on Wednesday. Ukraine had not immediately commented on the reported attack. Russia’s Defence Ministry said Ukraine had launched more than 900 drones at Russia and the annexed Crimean peninsula overnight.

The attack comes as both Moscow and Kyiv intensify their long-range strikes, with Moscow pounding Ukrainian data centres and logistics hubs in recent months.
