Lahore has witnessed a concerning increase in suicide cases in 2025, with at least 116 people taking their lives for various reasons, according to official data.
Figures compiled from January to December show that men accounted for the majority of cases, though women and transgender persons were also among the victims. Of the total, 81 were men, 33 women, and two transgender individuals.
Month-wise data indicate that suicide cases were reported throughout the year, underscoring the persistent nature of the problem. Twelve cases were recorded in January, 11 in February, and six in March. April and August each saw 12 cases, while May recorded the highest number with 17 deaths. Incidents were also reported in June, September, October, November, and December.
Experts say most cases were linked to domestic disputes, economic pressures, and personal problems. They warn that a lack of awareness about mental health issues and the absence of timely psychological support have worsened the situation.
Professor of Psychiatry at King Edward Medical University, Dr. Ali Madih Hashmi, said mental health challenges are often ignored or stigmatised, preventing individuals from seeking help at an early stage.
Mental health experts have urged the government and social welfare organisations to take the issue seriously and strengthen support systems, stressing that effective intervention and counselling services could help save lives.
