Asad Majeed appointed foreign secretary, notification issued

ISLAMABAD: The federal government has appointed seasoned diplomat Dr Asad Majeed Khan as new foreign secretary on Friday.

Asad Majeed Khan, who was serving as Pakistan’s ambassador to Belgium, has replaced Suhail Ahmed. He had been appointed Pakistan’s ambassador to the European Union nations a few months ago.

Dr. Asad Majeed Khan, a BPS 22, is presently posted as Pakistan’s Ambassador to Belgium, the European Union and Luxembourg has been appointed as the new Foreign Secretary.

A notification issued by the Establishment Division said that Majeed should be notified as the foreign secretary with immediate effect and until further orders.

“Dr. Asad Majeed Khan. a BS-22 officer of the Foreign Service of Pakistan, presently posted as Ambassador in the Embassy of Pakistan to Belgium, the European Union, and Luxembourg is transferred and posted as Secretary, Foreign Affairs Division with immediate effect and until further orders,” stated the notification.

Ambassador to Italy Jauhar Saleem was posted as the acting foreign secretary at a time when the Foreign Office could not finalize and agree on a name for a permanent foreign secretary.

He was chosen by former foreign secretary Sohail Mehmood in his last official act.

Asad Majeed is a career Foreign Service Officer and has been appointed as the 31st foreign secretary of Pakistan.

During his diplomatic career spanning over 34 years, the ambassador has held several key diplomatic assignments. He served as Pakistan’s ambassador to the United States, Japan, additional foreign secretary (Americas), director general (Americas), director general (West Asia), Pakistan’s charge d’ affairs ad interim to the United States, deputy chief of mission at the Embassy of Pakistan, Washington DC, additional secretary (Foreign Affairs) at the President’s Secretariat, director general (United Nations), and minister-counselor at the Permanent Mission of Pakistan to the United Nations.

Majeed holds a doctorate in International Economic and Business Law (LLD) from Kyushu University, Japan and has been a resource person at a number of academic institutions.

He is married and has two children.
