ATC Islamabad sentences five youtubers to multiple life terms in digital terrorism case

ISLAMABAD: Islamabad’s Anti-Terrorism Court on 9 May sentenced five youtubers to multiple life terms in a case involving digital terrorism against state institutions.

Judge Tahir Abbas handed two life sentences each to Adil Raja, Haider Mehdi, and journalist Wajahat Saeed, while Sabir Shakir and Mueed Peerzada also received two life terms each.

Sources said the court additionally imposed a total of 35 years of imprisonment under other charges and fines of 1.5 million rupees on each defendant.

The verdict follows the completion of the trial, which had been reserved earlier.

The accused were charged with carrying out terrorist acts against state institutions using digital means.

The court delivered the sentences as part of strict measures against such acts.

In separate cases under Abpara police jurisdiction, Sabir Shakir, Mueed Peerzada, and Syed Akbar Hussain received life sentences, while under Ramna police jurisdiction, Shahin Sahbai, Haider Mehdi, and Wajahat Saeed were convicted.

The trial was conducted in the absence of the accused upon the prosecution’s request. Prosecutor Raja Naveed Hussain Qayyani represented the state, while Gulfam Ashraf Goraya served as the court-appointed defence lawyer for the defendants.
