Babar Yaqoob to head Federal Land Commission    

ISLAMABAD: Government on Friday appointed former Secretary Election Commission of Pakistan Babar Yaqoob Fateh Muhammad as Chairman of the Federal Land Commission (FLC).

Ministry of Inter Provincial Coordination (IPC) issued a notification of his appointment.  As chairman of FLC, he will have status of a federal minister.

The Federal Land Commission is a statutory body of the federal government created in 1972. It was later reconstituted under Section 23 of Land Reforms Act, 1977.

The FLC is mandated to introduce and implement land reforms in the country and performing its judicial functions as a tribunal provided with concurrent and revisionary powers under Land Reforms Laws and Land Reforms Act, 1977.

The FLC comprises a chairman (with the status of a federal minister) and three members having been delegated with equivalent judicial powers to take cognizance of the cases of land reforms.

Babar Yaqoob Fateh Muhammad is a top bureaucrat of the country. He has served as secretary Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) and is known as the architect of the last five year strategic plan of the ECP. He has also served as federal Secretary Cabinet Division.

He has also held the position of Chief Secretary in Balochistan and Gilgit-Baltistan.   His name was on top of the list of Government’s nominees for the position of Chief Election Commissioner. However, some opposition parties did not agree to his nomination saying, if they agree to his name it will negate their stance of alleged rigging in the 2018 general elections.
