Bahawalpur, Cambridge Universities to digitise South Punjab heritage

BAHAWALPUR: Islamia University of Bahawalpur (IUB) and University of Cambridge will digitise the heritage of South Punjab under a project tagged (Mapping of Archaeology and Heritage of South Asia (MAHSA).

University of Cambridge will provide digital space and equipment while IUB will do ground survey and field work.

Concerned about safety of heritage of South Punjab, Vice Chancellor IUB Engr Prof Dr Athar Mehboob (T.I) extended the invitation to Prof Dr. Cameron Ptrie from university of Cambridge which he accepted and IUB for two days.

Prof Dr. Cameron Petrie is expert on South Asian archaeology and leading MAHSA project and an academician at University of Cambridge.

From Lahore, he was accompanied by Waqar Mushtaq and Moazam Durrani of Culture and Heritage research IUB.

To better understand the heritage a delegate of IUB brought him to take a look at Noor Mahal Museum and Indus queen Museum.

He was briefed on the development work by researcher and consultant of Noor Mahal, Moazzam Durrani.

Dr. Cameron was also taken to Cholistan for the visit of Derawer Forte, Royal Graveyard and Ghanveri Wala site.

During his visit to the VC secretariat, Dr. Cameron introduced his project to the Deans of the university. He presented his prophecy’s presentation.

Dr. Cameron was worried about the illegal excavation and degradation of the heritage sites. At a dinner arranged by the VC, Prof Cameron asked the District Police Officer to protect the heritage from illegal excavation.

Earlier, in his lecture at Abbasia campus of IUB, he introduced the objectives of the project to the students and faculty of History, Anthropology, Archaeology, architecture, Pakistan studies , Hospitality & Tourism, etc. He was welcomed by Prof Dr. Shazia Anjum Director Culture & Heritage Research centre.

He talked about his project on archaeology and future prospects of digitalisation and heritage.

Dr. Cameron’s colleague Afifa khan talked about legacy data.

Both institutions decided to join hands in conducting surveys and digitalise heritage sites before it’s too late.
