Bangladesh authorities seize 6,300 metres of illegal fishing nets in Halda River crackdown

CHATTOGRAM: The Fisheries Department of Hathazari upazila recently conducted a special operation in the Halda River, recognised as the only natural fish breeding ground in South Asia. During the operation, the department seized 6,300 metres of illegal nets and 12 fishing rods, APP reported.

The raid covered the area from Ramdas Munshir Hat to Nangolmora in the Halda estuary of the Nazirhat Halda River in Hathazari upazila. The operation was conducted from early morning until 11am.

Md Shoukat Ali, Senior Upazila Fisheries Officer of Hathazari, confirmed the seizure of 6,300 metres of char-enclosed nets and 12 fishing rods during the operation.

The confiscated nets have been stored at a temporary naval police camp along the Halda River and will be destroyed at a later date.
