Cabinet to take up Electric Vehicles Policy next week

ISLAMABAD: Federal Cabinet is likely to take up new electric vehicles (EV) policy in its meeting scheduled next week.

Malik Amin Aslam, advisor to Prime Minister on climate change told a Korean delegation on Wednesday that his ministry will table the EV proposed policy before the cabinet as part of Pakistan’s Green initiative to promote clean energy in the country.

South Korean company, which specializes in manufacturing batteries, during their meeting with the advisor, offered Pakistan setting up charging infrastructure for electric vehicles (EV) in the country.

Songuo motors, the Korean company’s delegation told the advisor that they were already in negotiations with local companies for joint venture to manufacture sophisticated batteries locally and then export them after catering local demand.

Delegation claimed their company was in partnership with some of the leading global automakers and was manufacturing finest quality batteries.

Aslam told the delegation that EV policy was ready and would be presented to the cabinet in one week’s time.

After approval from the cabinet, policy would bring about opening of new horizons of opportunities not only in the field of transportation and environment but also creating scores of green jobs, the advisor said.

He said that initially Pakistan would need a swappable solution for such vehicles until proper charging infrastructure was developed.

“Pakistan welcomes all companies and offers equal opportunities for everyone to invest in EV market of Pakistan,” he said.

Pakistan’s market is ripe for investment in EV and this is the high time that leading companies should come up with manufacturing, the advisor added.

According to the advisor, an important component of the proposed policy is to safeguard the interest of local manufacturers.

Delegation of Sanguo Motors briefed the Minister regarding their product line and business model.

They claimed that their company does not compromise on quality. And, they would also like to help Pakistani government in establishing standards for this newly developed technology.

Amin Aslam said swappable batteries were the suitable option for Pakistani market especially for three wheelers and slow moving vehicles until charging infrastructure was established.
