ISLAMABAD: In a significant political development, former Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan has decided in principle to take oath as a member of the Punjab Assembly on May 24.
Chaudhry Nisar had earlier denied reports that he will take the oath, saying that he had no such intention and that there was no truth in the rumors circulating in certain quarters.
However, sources now say that he has decided to take the oath after consultation with his constituency colleagues. The purpose of this decision is nothing but to represent the people of his constituency.
In the 2018 general elections, Chaudhry Nisar was elected as an independent member of the Punjab Assembly from PP-10 Rawalpindi. However, he did not take the oath of the provincial assembly seat.
It may be recalled that the Cabinet Committee on Legislation had passed an amendment to the Election Act 2017, according to which a seat will become vacant if the elected representative does not take oath within 60 days. Following the issuance of the ordinance, the Election Commission of Pakistan will de-notify such representatives.
