ISLAMABAD: Islamabad police plans to raise a special anti-narcotics unit to deal with growing menace of use of drugs, especially among the youth.
In a step that can have far reaching impact on social fabric of the capital city, Police force is contemplating comprehensive plans to address both supply and demand sides of narcotics. To cover legal side and address shortcomings in the existing laws Police would request parliament to amend certain legislations.

Use of narcotics in Pakistan had been a daunting issue since 1980’s Afghan war, however, in the recent years it has become more serious issue among the educated youth. New forms of narcotic drugs are easily available and male and female students of colleges and universities are addicts.

There are no concreate studies to real figures, however background interaction with youth, especially students shows that percentage is very high and alarmingly increasing. This is leading to other social issues.
Media representatives shared with police their suggestions to make the effort fruitful. They pointed out that there are “hotspots” in different areas of the city where this business allegedly runs in connivance with local police.
Proposal to start “naming and shaming” feature in police press releases
To make this plan successful, first step should be to identify elements within the force and purge Islamabad police from such officials. Another proposal was to make “naming and shaming” a permanent feature in police press releases and media may carry such campaigns so that people get discouraged.
It has been proposed that Islamabad Police along with civil society should launch a massive awareness campaign among the masses and make sure that whoever among the drug dealers is apprehended, is not spared.
Police also plans possibility of mandatory dope-tests at educational institutions
Islamabad police also plans to check possibility of dope-tests of all the students before getting admission educational institutions or on periodic basis.
