ECP reacts to Senate resolution to delay general elections

ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) responding to the Senate resolution—passed with majority votes to delay the general polls—clarified that
elections 2024 will be held on February 8.

ECP sources claimed that without the Supreme Court of Pakistan order, the elections could not be delayed.

The Senate Friday passed a resolution, presented by Senator Dilawar Khan, seeking a delay in the February 8 general elections, citing security concerns.

Independent Senator Dilawar Khan said there were security threats to political leaders, especially in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and there are concerns about the security of the political parties’ candidates.

The resolution stated that intelligence agencies had issued a security alert for election rallies.

Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz Senator Afnanullah Khan opposed the resolution.
