ECP rejects Scrutiny Committee report in PTI’s foreign funding case

ISLAMABAD: Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has rejected the report of Scrutiny Committee declaring it incomplete and unreliable in Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf foreign funding case.

The ECP in its order dated August 27, 2020 has stated that the Commission has thoroughly gone through the report and came to the conclusion “that the Committee neither scrutinized the record nor evaluated the evidence from the documents and failed to form definitive opinion.”

The Commission in its order has stated that it was the duty and responsibility of the Committee to scrutinize the authenticity, reliability and credibility of each and every document submitted by both parties. And after proper scrutiny of documents, Committee had to indicate its deficiency and authenticity.

Highlighting that our instructions were not followed in strict sense in spite of lapse of more than 29 months, ECP has directed the Committee to conduct a new comprehensive scrutiny and submit report in six weeks.

The ECP order validates the concerns of the petitioner Akbar Sher Babar, expressed repeatedly regarding the Transparency and Credibility of the Scrutiny process by the Committee formed in March 2018.

Talking to the media the petitioner and founding member of PTI Akbar S. Babar has welcomed the ECP order that validated his concerns expressed repeatedly on the lack of transparency of the Scrutiny process.

The Committee has adjourned meeting until September 24 as the petitioner sought time to consult his legal team on way forward in light of the ECP rejection of the Committee’s report.
