Fazlur Rehman's remarks insult sacrifices of martyrs, says defence minister

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif strongly criticised the statement made by Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F) Chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman, terming it highly irresponsible and an insult to the immense sacrifices of the martyrs.

In a post on X, Asif wrote that Fazlur Rehman is a seasoned politician and respected religious leader so greater responsibility was expected in his choice of words.

The Defence Minister said linking the sacrifices of soldiers to their salaries is not only unfair but also hurts the sentiments of the martyrs and their families.

“Nobody lays down their life merely for a salary. The sacrifice of life is driven by ideology, faith, a sense of duty, and deep devotion to the homeland.” He added.

He noted that Pakistan remains engaged in a war against terrorism, with members of the armed forces, law enforcement agencies and civilians continuing to lose their lives.

“The war against terrorism is ongoing, and personnel of the Pakistan Army, other institutions and civilians are embracing martyrdom. Describing their sacrifices as the result of a salary is not political criticism but moral insensitivity.”  Asif said.
