Senator Mushahid Hussain’s election as the Vice President of the CHRP is a notable achievement, making him the first parliamentarian from Pakistan to hold such a high-level office in a crucial body of the IPU.

This accomplishment underlines Pakistan’s commitment to contributing to the global discourse on human rights and international parliamentary cooperation.

Senator Mushahid Hussain has been actively involved in human rights advocacy, representing Asia in the 10-member CHRP since his election two years ago during the IPU General Assembly in Rwanda.

His extensive experience in this realm is further exemplified by his past role as the Leader of the Pakistan Delegation to the United Nations Human Rights Commission in Geneva. This background positions him well to make meaningful contributions to the CHRP in his new capacity as Vice President.

The senator’s dedication to human rights is not only demonstrated by his recent election but also by his past experiences. In the year 2000, Mushahid Hussain was recognized as a ‘Prisoner of Conscience’ by Amnesty International. This acknowledgment came in response to his 440-day illegal detention without charges, making him the sole Pakistani political prisoner to receive such an honor at that time.

Senator Mushahid Hussain’s global engagement extends beyond his role in the IPU. He is the Convenor of the Pakistan Parliamentary Forum on PKR (Palestine, Kashmir & Rohingya) and serves on the Executive Board of the Istanbul-based ‘Al Quds Parliament,’ actively supporting the Palestine Cause.

His multifaceted involvement in international forums reflects Pakistan’s commitment to addressing human rights issues on a global scale.

Senator Mushahid Hussain’s election as the Vice President of the IPU’s Committee of Human Rights for Parliamentarians is a testament to his unwavering commitment to human rights advocacy and international collaboration.

As the first parliamentarian from Pakistan to hold such a significant position, Senator Mushahid Hussain is poised to contribute meaningfully to the global discourse on human rights, bringing his wealth of experience and dedication to the forefront of international parliamentary efforts.
