ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast widespread rains across the country over the coming days, with different regions expected to experience varying intensities of showers.
A new monsoon system forming over the Bay of Bengal is also expected to impact the country starting July 28.
According to the latest advisory, light to moderate rain is expected in several cities from tonight until July 25. In Sindh, including Karachi, rain is likely from tonight through July 20. Balochistan is also expected to receive rain from today until July 23, while Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) is forecast to experience wet conditions from July 21 to 25. Cloudy weather is predicted across Punjab between July 20 and 25.
The Met Department has warned of potential flooding in local rivers and canals in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, KP, northeast Punjab, and Kashmir. There is also a risk of landslides blocking roads in hilly areas such as KP, Murree, Galiyat, Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan.
Amid rumors of cloudburst events in the country, Meteorological Department Director Anjum Nazir Zaigham clarified that no such incident has occurred in the current monsoon season. “There has been no cloudburst anywhere in the country, nor is there any likelihood of one in Karachi,” he told Samaa TV.
He further explained that cloudbursts typically occur in mountainous regions and are defined by extremely heavy rainfall — usually over 100mm in an hour. While parts of Sindh may see moderate rain with thunder in the next two days, heavier monsoon showers are likely to hit Karachi from next month.
Director Zaigham stated that a new monsoon system is developing over the Bay of Bengal, which could result in significant rainfall across Pakistan, particularly in Karachi, starting from July 28. “Good rains are expected under this new spell,” he added.
The public has been advised to stay alert, particularly in vulnerable and low-lying areas, and follow instructions issued by local authorities during weather emergencies.
