Islamia University Bahawalpur Organises Seminar on GBV and Student Opportunities Abroad

BAHAWALPUR: A legal literacy and awareness session was held at The Islamia University of Bahawalpur, focusing on Gender-Based Violence (GBV), workplace harassment, migration pathways and educational opportunities in Europe, particularly Germany.

The event was organised at the the Department of Anthropology in collaboration with Society for Human Rights and Prisoners’ Aid (SHARP).

Mudassir Sanghera and SHARP lawyers delivered informative sessions on gender-based violence, workplace harassment, and legal protection mechanisms available for victims. SHARP lawyers Ms. Arooj and Ms. Ameena also conducted awareness sessions on GBV and relevant legal frameworks.

Arno Kirchhof, Deputy Head of Mission at the German Embassy in Islamabad, spoke about migration pathways and educational opportunities for Pakistani students in Germany and Europe.

Speakers included Prof. Rubina Bhatti, Dean Faculty of Social Sciences, and Prof. Muhammad Saleem, Chairman of Applied Psychology. Prof. On the occasion, Rubina Bhatti highlighted the university’s zero-tolerance policy regarding harassment and emphasised the importance of effectively implementing anti-harassment laws and policies at the university level. She also discussed the significance of addressing gender-based violence through institutional support and awareness.

Prof. Muhammad Saleem remarked that “GBV has become a widely discussed issue and should be addressed with utmost responsibility and sensitivity.”

Other participants included Prof. Malik Mureed from the Gender Studies Department at BZU, Dr. Abid Shahzad, Director of International Interlinkages at IUB, Dr. Naeem Asim, Head of the Department of Public Health, Dr. Ali Raza, and Dr. Moazzam Durrani from the Departments of Psychology and Anthropology.

Following the session, an MoU was signed between SHARP and the Department of Anthropology to strengthen collaboration in research, student internships, training programs, and other areas of mutual interest. The MoU was signed by Dr. Mudassir Sanghera from SHARP, Prof. Rubina Bhatti, Dean Faculty of Social Sciences, and Dr. Farooq Ahmed, Chairperson of the Department of Anthropology.

The event concluded with a shared commitment to strengthen academic collaboration, student engagement, and community-based initiatives in the future.
