SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly (JKLA) has passed a resolution calling for the restoration of Article 370, which grants the region its special status under the Indian Constitution.

The motion was introduced by Chaudhary Surinder Singh, leader of the National Conference (NC) and the Deputy Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir.

In the resolution, the JKLA urged the Indian government to engage in dialogue to reinstate Jammu and Kashmir’s special status and its constitutional protections, revoked in 2019.

Chaudhary emphasized that efforts to restore Article 370 should respect the legitimate aspirations of the people of Jammu and Kashmir while maintaining national unity.

The resolution also called for a balanced approach that prioritizes the rights and desires of the region’s residents.

BJP members, however, vehemently opposed the resolution, arguing that it was not part of the day’s agenda.

They staged protests in the Assembly, chanting slogans against the motion.

Despite the disruption, Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather proceeded with the vote, and the resolution was passed, highlighting the deepening divide between regional parties and the central government.

The passage of this resolution with a majority vote in the JKLA marks a significant moment in the ongoing debate over the region’s constitutional status and the political future of Jammu and Kashmir.
