Kate Middleton is drawing attention for quietly moving away from long-standing royal etiquette, with observers viewing it as a reflection of a more modern and evolving monarchy.
The Princess of Wales has recently been seen closing her own car door — a move that may seem minor but has sparked wider discussion about changing royal norms.
Traditionally, such tasks were handled by aides, especially during public appearances.
Experts highlight shift in royal culture
Former royal butler Grant Harrold said the gesture reflects a broader transformation within the Royal Family.
“It sounds like a little thing, but it’s very interesting… the Royal Family is evolving and becoming less formal,” he noted.
He added that in the past, such behavior would have been “unheard of” during official engagements, pointing out that even Queen Elizabeth II never opened her own car door in public.
New vision for the monarchy
Alongside Prince William, Kate is believed to support a more modern, accountable monarchy.
Royal editor Russell Myers said the couple envisions an institution that connects with younger generations both in the UK and globally.
According to Myers, the Prince and Princess of Wales are focused on strengthening their family life first, before shaping their public image.
This approach marks a departure from previous royal structures, where public duty often took precedence.
Discussions around a “slimmed-down monarchy” have been ongoing for years.
Myers noted that King Charles III had previously envisioned a different structure, with Prince Harry playing a central role.
