MIAMI: Lionel Messi has been ruled out of Inter Miami’s crucial Leagues Cup match against Pumas UNAM after sustaining a minor muscle injury in his right leg.

The 37-year-old Argentine superstar picked up the injury during Inter Miami’s 2-1 victory over Necaxa last Saturday. Head coach Javier Mascherano confirmed the development, calling it a “minor muscle injury” and urging patience as Messi recovers.

“Within the bad news, it’s good news,” said Mascherano while addressing reporters. “He usually recovers very well and fast from these sorts of injuries. But for tomorrow, he is unavailable. Then we’ll see how he progresses.”

While there’s no fixed date for his return, the coaching staff remains optimistic that Messi could return before the knockout stages — provided Inter Miami qualify.

Messi, who has already scored 18 goals in the MLS this season, has been a key figure for the Herons. His arrival in 2023 brought immediate success, guiding Miami to their first-ever Leagues Cup title.

Miami’s final group-stage clash against Mexican side Pumas now carries more weight, as they likely need a win to advance to the Leagues Cup quarter-finals.

If they do progress, the team will have a two-week window before the next round, which could be enough time for Messi to return.

After the Pumas clash, Inter Miami are set to resume their Major League Soccer (MLS) campaign with a high-stakes fixture against Orlando City on Sunday.

Fans and the club alike will be hoping that Messi recovers swiftly and returns in time to influence both their domestic and international campaigns.
