Now Is The Time

The Sugar Commission’s report has been released and fingers have been pointed. Although only nine sugar mills have been audited, it unveiled a vast canvas of corruption.

Bold step, but a dangerous and troublesome one. Further actions of the Prime Minister in coming days will outline the future parameters.

As reported, the Commission on IPP’s is also moving ahead with the investigations. The result will not be any different from the Sugar Commission Report. Inordinate delay must be avoided.

There is another Commission in action, which is the Loan Commission. It is said that the mandate of the Commission is to investigate the loans obtained in the past fifteen years and point out their utilization including the disbursement, and to fix the responsibility.

There is another Commission working on Wheat and Ata (flour) mafia. Its report is expected soon.

Dilemma of our beloved Pakistan is that there are mafias in almost all the major businesses. Cement, media, land, dairy, poultry, vegetables, fruits, etc. The irony is that in almost all the businesses, the top management seems to be of the same people who have involvement in the dubious dealings as reported in the Commission Report.

Options open to the Prime Minister are limited. Either he takes action against them or compromise. Although the latter is not likely as per my assessment. So, he is only left with the option of taking action against them. But the biggest concern is, ‘How?’ He has gathered almost all the involved cronies, who are the biggest impediment.

Budget session of the Parliament is going to start. Uptill now the opposition has only acted unilaterally on the agenda of disrupting the proceedings without any fruitful outcomes. The legislation has been dismal.

Though the government has been able to get the budgets passed in the last two years, and hopefully will again do so through tail twisting, it will not be a smooth sail.

Now, what should be done?

Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto levied the Martial Law. He was the first civilian Martial Law Administrator. He did that for his personal gains but Imran Khan is much different from him. He is solely concerned about Pakistan. Therefore, special measures are needed to be taken.

  1. Declare emergency.
  2. Make a war cabinet from the selected few.
  3. Carry out accountability ruthlessly.
  4. Twist the arms to get the looted wealth back.
  5. Change the election rules and bring those in conformity with the national interest where people from all walks of life get an equal opportunity to rise to the top.
  6. Revamp the education system, where maximum attention is paid to science related subjects.
  7. Bureaucracy should be bridled. Rotten eggs appointed by Sharifs and Zardari should be thrown out.

It will not be an easy task. Luckily, the forces are standing with the Prime Minister. The judiciary should also be brought in the loop.

These suggestions are radical, but direly needed.

Any elections at this point in time will not yield any good results. The corrupts should be dealt with first. First things must be done first. Now is the time to do it.
