How many of you are so good at grammar that they can even acquire jobs as editors? Let’s take a step further and dissect rules for learning English.
When I was in my grade 1, one of my teachers exposed to us a golden principle. She proudly announced that, ‘there is just one rule in English language’. I had mentally got ready to find secret formula for mastering this but alas! My hopes withered before blooming. She said, the only rule says that ‘there isn’t any rule’. With a heavy heart, little did I know at that time that the atrocities of English as a second language would eventually make me believe this?
Our lives could have been much easier if we were to just deal with contronyms and homographs but a never stopping tsunami of weird ‘pronunciations’ was also to be taken care of for the rest of lives. This where an acceptable ‘chaos’ converted into ‘The Chaos’ when I came across with the below piece.
The Chaos is a poem by Gerard Nolst Trenité and it is said to contain around 800 example of irregular spellings and bizarre pronunciations. The first version of this hotchpotch ode appeared in 1920 in an appendix to textbook titled Drop Your Foreign Accent. At least my miseries could have been much lesser if I had not come across (compelled, rather forced) to read the version with 274 lines published by Spelling Society.
Well, they say, we should ‘share knowledge’ and ‘shall grow together’. So, I am posting the rhyme with a challenge that that only super smart people can read it correctly in one go with accurate pronunciations. Let me confess, it took me eight attempts to read where, cursing English language, Google searches and a Panadol tablet were additional to that. This phonetic labyrinth

Billet does not end like ballet;
Bouquet, wallet, mallet, chalet.

Which exactly rhymes with khaki.

Ricocheted and crocheting, croquet?
Right! Your pronunciation’s OK.
Rounded, wounded, grieve and sieve,
Friend and fiend, alive and live.
Is your r correct in higher?
Keats asserts it rhymes Thalia.
Hugh, but hug, and hood, but hoot,
Buoyant, minute, but minute.
Say abscission with precision,
Now: position and transition;
Would it tally with my rhyme
If I mentioned paradigm?
Twopence, threepence, tease are easy,
But cease, crease, grease and greasy?
Cornice, nice, valise, revise,
Rabies, but lullabies.
Of such puzzling words as nauseous,
Rhyming well with cautious, tortious,
You’ll envelop lists, I hope,
In a linen envelope.

Affidavit, David, davit.
To abjure, to perjure. Sheik
Does not sound like Czech but ache.
Liberty, library, heave and heaven,
Rachel, loch, moustache, eleven.
We say hallowed, but allowed,
People, leopard, towed but vowed.
Mark the difference, moreover,
Between mover, plover, Dover.
Leeches, breeches, wise, precise,
Chalice, but police and lice,
Camel, constable, unstable,
Principle, disciple, label.
Petal, penal, and canal,
Wait, surmise, plait, promise, pal,

Rhyme with “shirk it” and “beyond it”,
But it is not hard to tell

Worcester, Boleyn, to impugn.
Say in sounds correct and sterling
Hearse, hear, hearken, year and yearling.

Mind the z! (A gentle hint.)
Now you need not pay attention
To such sounds as I don’t mention,
Sounds like pores, pause, pours and paws,
Rhyming with the pronoun yours;
Nor are proper names included,
Though I often heard, as you did,
Funny rhymes to unicorn,
Yes, you know them, Vaughan and Strachan.

Please don’t monkey with the geyser,

Rather say in accents pure:

More than r, ch or w.

The archaic word albeit

Seven is right, but so is even,

S of news (compare newspaper),
G of gibbet, gibbon, gist,

Once, but nonce, toll, doll, but roll,

Pronunciation-think of Psyche!-
Is a paling, stout and spiky.
Won’t it make you lose your wits
Writing groats and saying “grits”?
It’s a dark abyss or tunnel
Strewn with stones like rowlock, gunwale,
Islington, and Isle of Wight,
Housewife, verdict and indict.
Don’t you think so, reader, rather,
Saying lather, bather, father?
Finally, which rhymes with enough,
Though, through, bough, cough, hough, sough, tough??
