ISLAMABAD: A Pakistani scientist, Dr Azeem Mahmood claims to have developed a quick and economical 30 minutes diagnostic test for Coronavirus (COVID-19).
Dr. Azeem Mehmood Butt from COMSATS University Islamabad, is the first Pakistani scientist to report the development of a unique dual-gene LAMP test for the detection of coronavirus.
By using his protocol, up to 96 patients can be tested in 30 min and results can be seen with naked eye.
Dual-gene LAMP method developed by Dr. Azeem Butt has already completed a successful trial in China and showed diagnostic accuracy of 95-100% in comparison to Center for Disease Control (CDC), USA and World Health Organization (WHO) recommended PCR methods.
Identification and isolation of COVID-19 patients and their contacts is crucial to break the chain of ongoing global health crisis.
Therefore, testing lies at forefront of fight against COVID-19 pandemic. Currently, PCR-based detection is the mainstream approach but with certain limitations however, this new technique is cheap and relatively more efficient and can deliver results in half an hour.
LAMP testing is already available for several other infectious diseases and is gaining popularity worldwide as an effective alternative to PCR.
However, several universities and research organizations around the world such as Oxford university, Kings College London , Nagasagi University Japan are working to develop LAMP-based diagnostic tests for the timely and mass-scale testing of coronavirus patients because mass-testing is the only way to break the chain of spread of COVID-19.

As far I know this is the best and quickest way of detecting the COVID-19 till date in Pakistan.
Government should take a quick action in applying this method all over the Pakistan 👍
Do share please 👍
This invention surely holds alot of importance but as said earlier more efficient testing is required. The Pakistani scientists have done a great job here and this invention can not only help Pakistan but many other countries as in time of such crisis mass production of it can be exported for earning
This is really a good news if this test really works as mentioned.
The rate of patients in Pakistan is low because of less testing.
If government officially allows this method to work we may get to know the actual figure of patients in Pakistan.
May Allah have his mercy upon all of us.
It is heartening to see Pakistanis raising their game up in this Pandemic and trying to contribute in fighting this. Pakistan govt should immediately start testing this along with PCR. Testing testing and testing is only way that seems to work now … Test as much as you can isolate as much as possible because this is the only way seems to contain Corona virus as of now until there’s a vaccine available …. PCR testing not only takes time but it is also expensive and for economically strained countries likes Pakistan this testing is no less than a blessing… Read more »
This news deserves more recognition and appreciation. In the midst of this crisis, the importance of testing can not be denied. And since it is economical, this method should be practiced more.
This really is a good news but the question is that will it work or not? Remember, some organizations have also claimed this before but it didn’t work at the end. So we have to wait & see. #COVID_19
I believe it is a proud moment for all us Pakistanis, for someone among us had the humanity and empathy for people who are deprived of the resources to get tested for COVID-19. It might not eradicate the entire pandemic itself but it will indeed prove to be a substantial input in the longer run.
This would help in testing more and more people.
It’s very necessary for us and our scientists done it..
It’s great to see that our people are trying best to cope up. Great initiative. We have all the skills we needed Mashallah and soon we will find the way to drive out. Really appreciable.
There’s been a study on this same technique from Chinese scientist showing the same sensitivity as pcr. But for some reason the test hasn’t been commercialized. If a test kit based on this technique becomes available, it will be a timely solution for the current situation.
Still a long shot to the actual solution as they would need funding to make this test available.
The efforts are indeed appreciated since Pakistan is in a dire need of more active testing.
This will really help our Pakistan and other countries COVID-19 patients in diagnosis and treatment. Hats off to our scientist for such an amazing invention.
It is really a good development in medical field to fight against corona.
This is really a good news. May Allah have mercy upon us. Ameen
When you’re sincerely ready to help others, you’re on the way to be a great doctor. Salute to all doctor’s especially Dr. Azeem Mahmood for self-sacrificing for us.
It is gooD news and it would help in more testing..
It is gooD news and it would help in more testing…
Great step 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
A proud moment for every Pakistani.
The Pakistani scientists have done a great job. It is very necessary for us. Salute to all doctors. This would be help in testing more people.. may Allah protect all of us.
Effort worth praising!
Hats off to our scientists. In this tough time they did such a good job. This will give hope to whole nation.
