Television is a great invention but it also has its downsides, depending on the content people consume.
Television has become a necessity in today’s world and is also considered an important item in dowry.
First let’s talk about the benefits of watching television. It creates awareness about things happening around us and also helps us learn about cultures, customs, traditions, education and entertainment.
Let’s talk about its negative effects now. It affects us physically as well as mentally. A US based research claims that 23% of the people who watch TV for 2 hours a day become obese and 14% of them become diabetic.
Another Australian study says that every single hour of watching TV at the age of 25 years reduces life expectancy. As sitting at one spot for more than 1 hour has adverse effects on the brain, especially on children.
As compared to adults, children need to have more outdoor activities. The more exercise they do, the better their physical health and brain.
The audience has to rewire their brains to stop watching TV till long hours. It is a waste of time. It has become common now to binge watch serials all day instead of engaging in outdoor activities and meeting new people, which actually enhances your brain’s capability and makes you strong.
Another bad effect of watching TV is that it hinders our ability to think, stopping us from critically thinking.
Sometimes watching TV programs is informational but we have to admit that most of them are worthless. These programs are designed that way to get the attention of the audience, to hook their thoughts to engage them. They have made it a business to spread information, rather than considering it their purpose.
A US study about young adults found that those who watch television 3 hours or more a day may die within 8 years, as compared to those who watch it 1 hour a day.
Television is a medium of transmitting messages with visuals but it has harmful effects due to radiation, falsehood and obsession.
Television releases harmful radiation that not only affects our eyes but also our minds. For example, if people sit too close to the screen, they are constantly being exposed to harmful radiation, which is too bad for their vision.
Television is also bad for us because it is based on falsehood. It is a media tool that twists the truth. It hides the truth.
It not only affects children’s physical health but also their psychological well being. Watching violent content makes them adapt those habits and they start showing aggressive behavior in order to solve their problems.
