KARACHI: Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari has displayed a pragmatic approach towards upcoming general elections, saying that the PPP has no objection to a potential delay in the election date.
Former President said in an interview that his party remains steadfast in its commitment to the democratic process, asserting that the election will take place, regardless of whether it is 8 to 10 days earlier or later than the scheduled date of February 8, 2024.
Zardari went on to express confidence in the PPP’s electoral prospects, suggesting that if successful, his son Bilawal Bhutto could potentially become the Prime Minister, while he himself might also consider the role.
However, he maintained that the ultimate decision rests with the people’s mandate.
Notably critical of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Founding Chairman Imran Kahn, Zardari referred to the PTI leader as “Ladla,” currently incarcerated, and accused him of steering the country’s ship into troubled waters by neglecting the welfare of the nation’s poor.
Zardari revealed that the PTI founder had proposed sharing half of the government term with the PPP during a no-confidence motion.
Addressing recent speculations about the PTI’s electoral success, Zardari dismissed foreign bloggers’ claims of a two-thirds majority, attributing them to paid propaganda.
He stressed the importance of a fair democratic process and urged the public to remain vigilant against misinformation.
In response to queries about internal party dynamics, Zardari clarified that Sardar Latif Khosa is not affiliated with the PPP, while highlighting differences in political thinking with Aitzaz Ahsan, who has been a neighbor of the PTI leader.
Zardari’s statements underscored the diverse perspectives within the political landscape and the evolving dynamics as the country approaches the crucial electoral period.
