RAWALPINDI: In a significant legal development, a local court in Rawalpindi formally indicted Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, in an Iddat case on Tuesday. The case, filed by Bushra’s former husband, Khawar Maneka, last month, alleges violations of Islamic marital laws.

Senior Civil Judge Qudratullah presided over the hearing at Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail, where the court commenced the trial by reading out the charges against the prominent political figure and his wife. Imran Khan, a former prime minister ousted from power in April 2022, and Bushra Bibi staunchly denied all allegations.

The courtroom, set up within Adiala Jail, saw the formal initiation of the trial, with the judge summoning witnesses for the subsequent hearings. The proceedings revolve around the marriage ceremony between Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi, which took place in Lahore in February 2018.

The ceremony was reportedly an intimate affair attended by close relatives, including the bride’s mother, and friends. Notably absent were PTI founder Imran Khan’s sisters, marking an unusual aspect of the event. The charges suggest violations of Iddat, a waiting period for a woman after the dissolution of marriage or death of a spouse, as prescribed by Islamic law.

Mufti Saeed conducted the nikah ceremony, with former PTI leader Awn Chaudhary and former Special Assistant to the Prime Minister (SAPM) Zulfi Bukhari serving as witnesses. The court proceedings are expected to shed light on the intricacies of the case and the alleged deviations from Islamic legal norms.

Imran Khan, a prominent political figure, faces legal scrutiny in a case that not only delves into his personal life but also raises questions about adherence to Islamic principles. The court has set the stage for a thorough examination of the allegations, with the next hearing slated to involve the testimony of witnesses central to the case.
