Punjabi Mushaira Celebrates Language and Culture at Rawalpindi Women’s University

RAWALPINDI: The Punjab Institute of Language, Art and Culture (PILAC) collaborated with Rawalpindi Women’s University (RWU) to host a captivating Punjabi Mushaira on Thursday. The event, brimming with enthusiasm, was presided over by the internationally acclaimed poet, Prof. Anwar Masood.

Renowned poets from across Pakistan, including Dr. Inamul Haq Javed, Syed Sulaiman Gilani, Murali Chauhan, Mohammad Arif, and Dr. Aziz Faisal, enthralled the audience with their powerful recitations. The event was skillfully hosted by the well-known poet, Shahbaz Chauhan.

The Mushaira attracted a diverse audience, with members of PILAC, Radio Punjab Rung FM 99.4, RWU faculty and staff, and a large number of students immersing themselves in the rich tapestry of Punjabi poetry.

Highlighting the Importance of Punjabi Language

Prof. Dr. Anila Kamal, Vice Chancellor of RWU, opened the ceremony by emphasizing the critical role of language and culture in safeguarding identity and heritage. She expressed concern about the declining use of Punjabi in the province and stressed the need for its promotion.

“Punjabi is an inseparable part of Pakistan’s cultural heritage,” stated Prof. Dr. Kamal. “Its poetry and literature have resonated with millions for generations.”

Ms. Benish Fatima Sahi, Director General of PILAC, echoed the importance of mother tongues and regional languages. She underscored that continued use of Punjabi by young girls, the future mothers, would ensure its seamless transmission to future generations.

“In this age of artificial intelligence,” Ms. Sahi remarked, “focusing on regional languages is crucial to preserving our cultural identity.”

Collaboration and Commitment

The event also saw the allocation of space for Punjab Rang FM 99.4 at the university. Ms. Sahi shared insights from the Mushaira, while Nasir Ahmed and Imad Tabish of Radio Punjab Rung FM 99.4 ensured the smooth administration of the event. Shafaat Abbas, Deputy Director of PILAC (Lahore), and Producer Punjab Rang Raja Hasan Jalil also played key roles in its success.

The Punjabi Mushaira served as a powerful testament to the vibrant cultural tapestry of Punjab and PILAC’s unwavering commitment to promoting the Punjabi language and its rich literary heritage.
