Rabbani criticizes government for ‘bypassing’ parliament on board of peace membership

Expressing concerns over Pakistan’s decision to join Trump’s Board of Peace (BOP), former Senate chairman Mian Raza Rabbani said that Pakistan should not have joined the BOP without a national debate.

According to a statement issued on Thursday, he said, “BOP is a controversial international organization, with the potential to undermine the UN,” adding that Parliament should have been taken into confidence.

Rabbani noted that the Federal Government of Pakistan should focus on making strategic decisions after a national debate, rather than targeting the consensus established by the 18th Amendment.

He added that the 18th Amendment was passed by national consensus in Parliament and among the federating units.

“It is the linchpin that holds the Federation together. Any attempt to dismantle this equilibrium will have devastating consequences, given the internal fault lines,” he said.
