ISLAMABAD: Mian Raza Rabbani, former Chairman Senate was of the view that the lack of knowledge of the Constitution, 1973, of the former Prime Minister, is evident when he subscribes a role to the COAS with reference to accountability of civilians.
“No rules, law or the Constitution permits such a function of the Army Chief. This just reflects how Imran Khan used state institutions to further his political agenda. That is why the desperation for snap elections”, Rabbani said press statement.
He said that the demand for General Elections in the face of the worst natural calamity is not in sync with the ground realities. PTI being a urban or semi urban party is insensitive to the catastrophic situation that exists in the rural areas, where village after village is separated by vast expanse of gushing water, he continued.
According to NDMA, 5,563 kilometres of roads and 243 bridges have been damaged. With such a communication network how are elections possible, the former Chairman Senate said, adding 1.4 million houses have been destroyed and over 1,265 people lost to the floods.
He said that the floods have washed away schools and hospitals. The worst is yet to come, as the water recedes, it will bring the issues of rehabilitation, epidemic and starvation as standing crops have been destroyedm he added.
He said that it is strange that the central party (PTI) demands general elections but the KPK government has called for a postponement of the by-elections in the Province.
All political parties should be warned, if they fail to stand by the people in this hour of dire need, not only will it have serious consequences on the federation but people will reject the political parties, he added.
The anger of the people reflects in their behaviour when political leaders visit flood affected areas. The writing is on the wall, Rabbani said. He added given the economic situation, internal fault lines, polarisation intra provincial and with the federal government, disillusionment with political parties will lead to anarchy.
Let there be a “ceasefire to work for the flood ravaged”, Rabbani said.
