KARACHI: Former Chairman Senate Mian Raza Rabbani has said that the 27th Amendment, to the extent of the creation of the Federal Constitutional Court, has articulated the Charter of Democracy and strengthened the federal character of the Constitution of 1973.
The 27th Amendment, he said in a statement, contains certain provisions that have impacted the right to a fair trial and the independence of the judiciary. He stated that judges can now be removed on vague grounds and shuffled around.
He added that it is for Parliament to review the amendment, and that Amnesty International’s report amounts to interference in the internal affairs of Pakistan.
