RAWALPINDI: In a significant turn of events, former Interior Minister and Awami Muslim League chief Sheikh Rasheed was arrested on Tuesday after the cancellation of his bail in the May 9 riots case. The arrest follows a legal process where Rasheed appeared before an Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) for the confirmation of bail in 14 cases related to the May 9 riots.

Rasheed had sought bail in all 14 cases registered against him in connection with the May 9 riots. The court granted him bail in thirteen cases; however, the New Town police station case proved to be an exception, as his bail was rejected in this particular instance.

As a consequence of the bail cancellation in the New Town police station case, Sheikh Rasheed was promptly taken into custody by the police directly from the court premises.

The charges against Rasheed involve accusations of planning and involvement in vandalism, as well as orchestrating an attack on a sensitive installation on May 9. These allegations stem from incidents that unfolded in the aftermath of the arrest of the former prime minister.

The arrest marks a significant development in the legal proceedings against Sheikh Rasheed, a prominent political figure with a history of involvement in various capacities within the government. The rejection of bail in one of the cases underscores the gravity of the accusations leveled against him.

The legal process will now continue as Rasheed faces charges in the New Town police station case. The arrest not only adds a new chapter to Rasheed’s legal troubles but also raises questions about the implications for his political future.

As the legal proceedings unfold, the public will be keenly watching the developments surrounding Sheikh Rasheed’s case, which has garnered attention due to its connection with the May 9 riots and the subsequent events that unfolded in the political landscape. (With additional input from INP)
