ISLAMABAD: Security has been tightened outside Shifa International Hospital, with a heavy deployment of police personnel as the deadline set by the Supreme Court for transferring Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf founder Imran Khan to the facility for medical treatment draws closer.
The Shifa medical team will examine him after his arrival at the hospital. Two members of his medical team have entered Adiala jail. His medical team is expected to include specialists in cardiology, general medicine and ophthalmology.
Earlier, the SC ordered that Imran be moved to the hospital for treatment for the next few days and directed the government to arrange weekly meetings between him and his family. In response, the government filed a review petition before the SC, calling its order “discriminatory in nature”.
Imran Khan’s sister, Dr Uzma, and his personal physician, Dr Faisal, have also entered Adiala jail. Both are members of his medical team and will assess him before the proposed transfer.
Meanwhile, Aleema Khan and Qasim Zaman are standing outside Gate No. 5.
The federal police have been alerted over the proposed transfer, while personnel at the Police Lines Headquarters have been ordered to remain ready.
According to sources, a section of Shifa International Hospital is to be declared a sub-jail. The notification will be issued by the Islamabad chief commissioner after consultations are completed.
The inspector general of police and other senior officers have reached Shifa International Hospital to review security arrangements ahead of the transfer. Officers at the hospital are also briefing the police chief on the security measures.
Imran — imprisoned since Aug 5, 2023, for concealing details of Toshakhana gifts — is serving a 14-year sentence at Rawalpindi’s Adiala jail in a £190 million corruption case, also known as the Al-Qadir Trust case. However, his health has deteriorated over the course of his prison sentence, prompting outcry from members of the party.
