Farm houses in Islamabad getting water from “drinking water supply lines” since decades: Reveals Mayor

ISLAMABAD: In the Federal Capital, where middle and lower-middle income sectors have been facing chronic water shortage for decades, the elite farm houses have been getting water from “drinking water supply lines”.

The Mayor Metropolitan Corporation Islamabad (MCI) during a briefing to the National Assembly Standing Committee on Thursday revealed that Capital Development Authority (CDA) provided connections to the farm houses, located around the federal capital, from the drinking water supply lines.

After this shocking revelation the standing committee, headed by MNA Raja Khurram Shahzad Nawaz, recommended that 24 connections provided to farm houses may be disconnected immediately.

It is not clear how many farm houses have been provided connections from drinking water supply lines and how much water they have consumed since they were set-up.

In the master plan of the capital city, farm houses were reserved to grow fruits and vegetables for the residents to make Islamabad self-sufficient in food. However, over the years these farms houses were allocated to the influential people, most of them use them as luxury residences

Many areas of the federal capital, the middle and lower middle class sectors of Islamabad directly run by CDA have been facing severe water shortage. The residents of these sectors have to buy water from tankers.

Residents of these sectors fear that it is not clear if the recommendation of the committee will be implemented since the farm houses belong to the elite class.

Briefing on shortage of water in sector I-10, Mayor MCI informed the members of the NA penal that supply of water is affected due to scheduled and unscheduled load shedding in the area, electrical and mechanical faults at tube wells and leakages in water supply lines. He assured that the faulty tube wells will be rectified within one week.

The Mayor also briefed the Committee about sanitation services in rural areas of Islamabad. He said sanitation services in rural areas were not provided before establishment of MCI and it was under control of ICT Administration. Sanitation directorate started provision of services partially in rural areas, he added.

Mayor claimed that performance of MCI was badly affected due to legal and financial issues faced by it. The Committee noted with great concern that the public is suffering due to differences between MCI and CDA, so, the Committee directed the Ministry of Interior to resolve disputes between CDA and MCI.

On August 23, the apex court, in its verdict, stated that it was not an appropriate stage for the Supreme Court to interfere in the matter of the relevant video and its effects, particularly when the video may have relevance to a criminal appeal presently sub judice before the Islamabad High Court.

It added that a criminal investigation was already being conducted into the matter by the Federal Investigation Agency.

The video in question had shown the accountability judge who sentenced Nawaz Sharif to prison in the Al Azizia reference, judge Arshad Malik, allegedly speaking to a PML-N supporter about the case.

Amid deepening political and judicial crises, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) after consultation with the apex court had removed the accountability court judge on July 12, following which the Law Ministry temporarily barred Arshad Malik from working.

ISLAMABAD: Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Asif Saeed Khan Khosa on Friday constituted a full bench to hear petitions challenging the presidential reference filed against Justice Qazi Faez Isa .

The bench headed by Justice Umar Atta Bandial comprising 10 judges of the apex court is scheduled to hear the petitions on September 24.

Members of the Supreme Judicial Council including Chief Justice Asif Saeed Khosa, Justice Gulzar, Justice Mushir ALam, Justice Sardar Tariq and Justice Ejazul Ahsan are not part of the bench.

A seven-judge bench of the apex court had dissolved after Munir A Malik, the counsel for Justice Isa, had raised an objection and requested the court to constitute a new bench.

Malik had requested that a full-court bench excluding members of the Supreme Judicial Council be formed.

Justice Isa had written letters to President Alvi after the law minister instituted a presidential reference against him for allegedly possessing properties in the United Kingdom in the name of wife and children.

In the second reference, Advocate Waheed Shahzad Butt had contended that by repeatedly writing letters “instead of explaining the sources of funds for such acquisition of properties”, Justice Isa had violated the code of conduct for judges of the superior courts. Advocate Butt had also alleged that the letters were leaked to the media to generate unnecessary public controversy, that the language used in the letters was offensive, that the judge had unduly targeted the Prime Minister and leveled unsubstantiated allegations against President Alvi and other federal cabinet members. Chaudhry mills case: Court approves seven-day physical remand of Maryam Nawaz, Yousaf Abbas

LAHORE: Accountability court on Wednesday has approved seven-day physical remand of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) vice president Maryam Nawaz and managing director at Sharif Group of Industries and former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s nephew Yousaf Abbas in Chaudhry Sugar Mills case.

During the hearing, the court has directed the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) to again produce the accused on September 25.

Previously, NAB prosecutor had submitted a report in the court and told that Saeed Saif Bin Jabbar Asadi had transferred 94 lac shares to Maryam Nawaz in 2008 whereas she further transferred 70 lac shares to Yousaf Abbas in 2019.

On August 8, NAB team had detained Maryam Nawaz outside the Kot Lakhpat Jail in Lahore for skipping appearance in Chaudhry Sugar Mills due to meeting with her father and former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

Maryam Nawaz was unable to provide the required details of foreign investment in sugar mills while she was also failed to satisfy the bureau regarding source of income for purchasing the shares. NAB has also claimed that three foreigners had transferred 11000 shares worth millions of rupees on Maryam Nawaz’s name.

The anti-corruption watchdog’s daycare centre was declared sub-jail for the PML-N leader while female police and NAB personnel were deployed for her.

On July 19, accountability court had turned down petition of NAB claiming Maryam Nawaz had produced a bogus trust deed in Avenfield reference.

Judge Mohammad Bashir had declared anti-corruption watchdog’s appeal as unmaintainable and ruled that no action can be taken in this regard until the decision of Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Maryam’s petition against the Avenfield properties verdict.

On July 6, 2018, accountability judge Mohammad Bashir had convicted former premier Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam Nawaz in Avenfield properties reference and sentenced them 10 years and 07 years imprisonment, respectively.

HRCP says ‘deeply concerned’ about government’s special media tribunals

HRCP says 'deeply concerned' about govt's special media tribunals
Google Image

ISLAMABAD: The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) on Wednesday said it was deeply concerned about the government’s decision to establish special media tribunals to settle cases of media organisations, workers, owners and citizens.

In a post on Twitter, the independent watchdog on human rights said, “HRCP is deeply concerned at the government’s announcement that it is setting up media tribunals. Given the government’s woeful record on press freedoms, HRCP urges it to refrain from pressurising the media further. How are tribunals expected to maintain the media’s independence?”

On Tuesday, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Information and Broadcasting Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan said after the establishment of the tribunals, all media-related cases would be transferred to them, which would be bound to decide on the matter within 90 days of receiving complaints.

The decision to the effect had been taken as part of media rules and regulations the government intended to introduce in Pakistan like the best practices being followed in other democratic countries, she added.

Setting up the tribunals would make the media more responsible, she added.

Awan added, at present, media organisations, owners, workers and the civil society moved their media-related complaints to the judiciary to get relief. “The decision would help prevail truth and supremacy of law, besides encouraging the process of self-accountability in the media,” she added.

She said the tribunals would hear specific media complaints and any organisation or person having any complaint against the media could approach them.

Prime Minister Imran Khan, she said, was of the opinion that positive criticism was vital for the development of a society and better governance, but some elements were using freedom of expression for personal objectives.

The prime minister remarked that some elements were intentionally spreading baseless rumours to fulfil their nefarious designs and a section of media was being used as a tool, she added.

She quoted the prime minister as saying that it was being done to create mistrust between the people and the government.

Responding to questions from reporters, she said that all the stakeholders would be taken on board regarding the media tribunals, which would work under the supervision of the superior judiciary.

The tribunals would be free from government control or influence as government functionaries would also be accountable to them. (INP)
