PML-N awards tickets in Islamabad, Rawalpindi to old faces

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N)while awarding party tickets for upcoming February 8 General Elections in Rawalpindi Division and Islamabad has preferred old faces on most of the seats with few exceptions.

Minimizing the role of former senator Chaudhry Tanveer Khan from Rawalpindi, the party has awarded only two tickets in his family unlike four tickets awarded to his family in last general elections of 2018, when he lost all the seats.

His son Danyal Chaudhary is awarded a party ticket from NA-57 where he will face Shaikh Rasheed Ahmed while the son of Tanveer’s sister in law Imran Ilyas Chaudhry is awarded a ticket from PP-11.

In a wise move, the party has awarded party tickets to former MNA Haji Pervaiz Khan from PP-19 and Sajjad Khan from PP-13 that will eventually help to unite the party vote bank as both were also in the run to get a ticket for National Assembly’s seat.

On the other side, the party ticket from the second seat of the Rawalpindi city NA-56 to the Muhammad Hanif Abbasi while the party tickets for PP-16 and PP-17 are given to Ziaullah Shah and Raja Hanif, who remained MPAs from these constituencies in the past.

After a decision to avoid contesting election by the Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, party has awarded the party ticket for NA-51 to Raja Usama Sarwar, the son of former senior provincial minister Punjab Raja Ashfaq Sarwar.

However, an ongoing vacuum in the constituency has paved a way for Bilal Yameen Satti, the son of the former MPA of old good days Col. Yameen Satti from PP-6 while the party ticket from the other provincial constituency PP-7 is given to Raja Sagheer Ahmed, who has a strong hold in the area and he won the general elections of 2018 as independent candidate and join ruling PTI but later become a turncoat and voted Hamza Shehbaz Sharif.

Raja Sagheer was disqualified by the Supreme Court but he remained successful to get back his seat in the by-elections. Awarding a ticket to him eventually ended the decade’s long electoral politics of Raja Zafar-ul-Haq as his son Raja Muhammad Ali was again refused a party ticket.

From Gujar Khan, Raja Javed Ikhlas has managed to get a party ticket. He remained district nazim Rawalpindi while he was elected in 2013 on PML-N ticket by defeating outgoing Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf but could not resist him in 2018 and lost the seat again.

The party tickets for provincial assembly in this constituency are given to Iftikhar Ahmed for PP-8 and Raja Shoukat Aziz Bhatti for PP-9. Mr. Bhatti is the son of former judge of the Lahore High Court Justice Aziz Bhatti while Iftikhar Ahmed belongs to a spiritual family of Gujar Khan.

Meanwhile, Malik Ibrar Ahmed, who is divisional president of the party has managed to get all three tickets of his constituency for his family as he himself is awarded ticket for NA-55, his brother Malik Iftikhar Ahmed for PP-14 and Malik Mansoor Afsar for PP-15.

On the other side, the party has balanced the loyalty and resources as it awarded a party ticket from NA-53 to its time tested candidate Engineer Qamar-ul-Islam but at the same time accommodated the owner of a private housing society Chaudhry Naeem Ijaz on PP-10.

PML-N while taking another move has made a seat adjustment in Taxila and kept the National Assembly seat for Ghulam Sarwar Khan and Provincial Assembly seat for his nephew Amar Siddique Khan of Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party while awarding the ticket to Umer Farooq.

In Islamabad, the party has issued tickets to its previous candidates from NA-46 to Anjam Aqeel Khan and from NA-48 to Dr. Tariq Fazal Chaudhry while the decision for NA-47 has yet to be made as a seat adjustment with IPP is also under consideration on this seat.

Sources said that the party wants to give a ticket to Shaikh Anser Aziz but IPP is pushing to accommodate its leader Amir Kiani on this seat however a final decision is awaited so far.

From District Attock, Sheikh Aftab Ahmed was awarded the National Assembly ticket to contest from NA-49 and Malik Sohail Khan from NA 50 and both are the former MNAs from the area.

For provincial assembly, the following candidates were awarded tickets in the constituency including PP-1 Jahangir Khanzada, PP-2 Iftikhar Ahmed Khan, PP-3 Huneed Akbar, PP-4 Sher Ali Khan and PP-5 Malik Aitebar.

From District Chakwal, the ticket of NA-58 was awarded to Maj (retd) Tahir Iqbal, and provincial tickets from PP-20 to Sultan Haider Al Khan and PP-21 to Tanvir Aslam Malik.

From District Talagang, the NA 59 ticket was awarded to Sardar Ghulam Abbas and PP 23 to Shehryar Malik while decision on PP-22 is yet awaited.

From District Jhelum, the party has only awarded tickets on two provincial assembly seats including PP-25 to Chaudhary Nadeem Khadim and PP-26 to Nasir Mahmood Lilla while rest of the constituencies of the provincial assembly and the national assembly are yet to be awaited.

MQM-P names contestants from Karachi for NA seats

KARACHI: The Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) on Thursday released a list of the party candidates contesting elections on National Assembly seats from Karachi, according to which MQM-P’s 16 candidates would contest elections from 18 NA seats in the megalopolis.

As per the list, in order from the lower number of NA seats to the higher number, MQM-P will field Aasia Ishaque from NA-232, Javed Hanif from NA-233, Muhammad Abubakar from NA-234, Iqbal Mahsud from NA-235 and Hassan Sabir from NA-236 constituency of Karachi.

While, Abdul Rauf Siddiqui will contest elections on NA-237 seat, Sadiq Iftikhar on NA-238, Arshad Vohra on NA-240 and Dr Farooq Sattar from district South’s NA-241.

MQM-P Senior Deputy Convener Mustafa Kamal will contend for the hot seat of NA-242 situated in Keamari district. The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz has been luring the party to withdraw its candidate in favour of former prime minister Shehbaz Sharif.

Humayun Usman will be the candidate for NA-243 seat, Farooq Sattar for NA-244, Hafizuddin for NA-245, Aminul Haque for NA-246 and Mustafa Kamal for NA-247.

MQM-P Convener Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui will be the party candidate on NA-248 seat in district Central, while Ahmed Saleem Siddiqui will contest on NA-249 and Farhan Chishti on NA-250.

The party did not issue any NA ticket to a candidate for the NA seat in Lyari.

First CIU to probe cyber crime established in Islamabad, under Police, FIA

ISLAMABAD: The first Cybercrime Investigation Unit (CIU) to probe cybercrimes was established in Islamabad, the federal capital to vigorously combat the cybercrimes around the country.

The newly inaugurated Cyber Crime Investigation Unit has started its work in this regardm as Islamabad Police and Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) have joined hands to cope with the cybercrimes.

The initiative was taken after amendments to the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA), empowering Islamabad Police to register cybercrime cases under Section 30.

Seeking to harness specialized expertise, Islamabad Police have collaborated with the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to leverage technical assistance in the investigation of cybercrimes. The partnership is geared towards addressing the intricate challenges posed by cyber threats and ensuring a robust response to the evolving landscape of digital offenses.

The successful completion of the first phase of training for 60 officers from Islamabad Police, in collaboration with the FIA, marks a crucial step in building a skilled workforce proficient in handling cybercrime cases. These officers have undergone specialized training to equip them with the knowledge and tools necessary for effective cybercrime investigations.

To streamline and centralize efforts, the Cyber Crime Investigation Center has been established at the F-6 Service Center. This state-of-the-art facility will serve as a hub for coordinating and conducting in-depth investigations into cybercrimes, providing a dedicated space for experts to analyze and respond to digital offenses.

Operating under the authority of CPO Safe City and the oversight of SSP (Safe City), the officers of the Cyber Crime Investigation Unit will execute their responsibilities with precision, ensuring a thorough and coordinated strategy in addressing cyber threats.

In a citizen-friendly move, individuals were encouraged to approach any police station to request the inclusion of cybercrime cases, fostering community involvement in the fight against digital offenses.

The F-6 Cyber Crime Investigation Center was set to become operational from January 15, further fortifying Islamabad’s capabilities in combating cyber threats. The collaborative efforts between Islamabad Police and the FIA underscore a commitment to eliminating emerging forms of criminal activities and safeguarding the digital landscape for the residents of the federal capital.

Cipher Case: IHC withdraws stay trial, annuls proceedings from December 14

ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has accepted an appeal of former prime minister Imran Khan against the in-camera trial of the cipher case against him, and annulled the proceedings of the case from December 14 onwards.

The IHC has also suspended the stay order in the cipher case in a verdict issued by Justice Miangul Hasan Aurangzeb.

The August Court had stayed the trial of the cipher case in the trial court on December 28.

During Thursday’s proceedings, the judge asked Attorney General for Pakistan (AGP) Mansoor Usman Awan if he wanted the proceedings to be reversed to backdate, adding that if that has to be done, it should happen from the date the order was passed.

Justice Aurangzeb said that a formal order will also be issued in this regard.

The AGP assured the court that the prosecution would conduct the in-camera proceedings afresh. He added that they were ready to record the statements of 13 witnesses all over again.

Thus, on the assurance of AGP Awan, the court withdrew the stay order against the cipher trial.

On December 28, the IHC had issued a stay order on the ongoing cipher case trial against former prime minister Imran Khan till January 11.

The high court heard a plea against the indictment of Imran Khan and PTI Vice Chairman Shah Mahmood Qureshi in the cipher case. The PTI had challenged the trial court’s order of December 12 to indict Imran Khan and Shah Mahmood in the case.

Justice Miangul Hasan Aurangzeb issued the order for today’s hearing.

The court granted the request for an immediate stay order on the cipher trial and has stopped the proceedings of the case till January 11. The court issued a notice to the federal government in this regard and ordered that all necessary documents should be submitted at the next hearing.

Shan Masood hits double ton against Aussie Prime Minister’s XI

CANBERRA: Pakistan Test captain Shan Masood Thursday knocked a double ton on the second day of the four-day game against Australia’s Prime Minister’s XI at Manuka Oval in Canberra.

Meanwhile, the Prime Minister’s XI posted 149-2 in 60 overs after Pakistan declared their innings at 391-9.

Masood, on the other hand, resumed his overnight tally of 156 to add 45 more runs to his score, reaching his third first-class double hundred. He ended with an unbeaten 201 from 298 deliveries, including 14 boundaries and a maximum.

Right-arm fast bowler Jordan Buckingham, who had taken three wickets the previous day, struck twice today to complete a five-wicket haul. He removed Aamir Jamal and Mir Hamza, who both went out cheaply.

Shan declared the innings after Khurram Shahzad was run out courtesy of a direct hit by Nathan McSweeney, with the scorecard reading 391-9 in 116.2 overs.

In return, Prime Minister’s XI opening duo of Cameron Bancroft (53, 128b, 3x4s) and Marcus Harris (49, 102b, 6x4s) put up a 96-run stand to give their team a solid start.

Abrar Ahmed provided the breakthrough for Pakistan, dismissing Harris in the 36th over. Right-arm pacer Khurram Shahzad trapped Bancroft LBW to provide Pakistan the second wicket.

Cameron Green (18 not out, 71b, 2x4s) and Matt Renshaw (19 not out, 60b, 1×4) batted together to add 37 more runs to take the total to 149-2 at stumps, with the side trailing by 242.

The third day’s play at Manuka Oval will resume on 0430 PKT.

Pashteen remanded in police custody for seven days

ISLAMABAD: The anti-terrorism court (ATC) in Islamabad on Thursday handed over Pashtun Tahaffuz Movement (PTM) chief Manzoor Pashteen in police custody for seven days.

Pashteen was arrested in Balochistan’s Chaman on December 4 by Levies and police personnel from the Gudhamo area on disputed claims of firing by his party and local police.

Police claimed the PTM chief was arrested after gunshots were fired at police from his vehicle, while Pashteen’s party had alleged that law enforcement agencies fired at his vehicle when he was on his way from Chaman to Turbat.

Last week, Pahsteen had announced joining the protest against the alleged extrajudicial killing of Balaach Mola Bakhsh in Turbat. The protest has been going on for more than a week after CTD claimed to have killed Bakhsh, along with three other men, in an encounter on November 24.

Imran Khan asks Supreme Court to dismiss cipher case

ISLAMABAD: Chairman Pakistan Tehreek e Insaf (PTI) Imran Khan has approached the Supreme Court of Pakistan (SCP) against the cipher case.

In the petition filed against the decision of the Islamabad High Court (IHC), the Supreme Court has been requested by PTI leader to dismiss the cipher case.

The federal government, the FIA and the investigating officer have been parties to the petition. The petition was filed in the Supreme Court by Sardar Latif Khosa on behalf of Imran Khan.

The Islamabad High Court had previously dismissed the PTI chairman’s petition.

Earlier in the day, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) had extended its stay on the jail trial of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan in the cipher case till November 20.

A two-judge bench of the high court, comprising Justice Miangul Hasan Aurangzeb and Justice Saman Rifat Imtiaz, heard an intra-court appeal of Imran Khan against the jail trial in the cipher case and appointment of the Official Secrets Act judge in the case.

Search and combing operation conducted in Islamabad against illegal foreigners

ISLAMABAD: Islamabad Capital Police, Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) conducted a search and combing operation against illegal foreigners at Shams Colony police station jurisdiction, a public relations officer said.

According to police reports, search and combing operations are being conducted in different areas of the city to ensure the safety and security of the Islamabad citizens.

The operation was conducted in different areas of Shams Colony police stations jurisdiction by CTD, QRF and local police teams under the supervision of DSP CTD. During the operation, 18 houses and 62 individuals were thoroughly checked while eight illegal foreigners were shifted to the police station for further verification purposes.

ICCPO Dr. Akbar Nasir Khan said that the purpose of the search and combing operations was to heighten the security in the federal capital. All zonal officers were directed to continue these operations in their respective areas. Citizens are also requested to cooperate with police during the checking.

ISLAMABAD: The Institute of Strategic Studies Islamabad (ISSI) will organize a special seminar to commemorate the “40 Years of Friendship- Past, Present and Future between Republic of Korea and Pakistan”.

The ISSI will hold the seminar today (Wednesday) in collaboration with the Embassy of the Republic of Korea (ROK), said a press release.

Pakistan and the Republic of Korea have forged a strong partnership, marked by strategic cooperation, economic collaboration, and cultural exchanges.

The two nations have witnessed a steady expansion in bilateral relations, with a focus on mutual development and peace in the region. South Korea’s robust investment in Pakistan, particularly in infrastructure, technology, and manufacturing sectors, has greatly contributed to Pakistan’s economic growth and modernization. Bilateral cooperation extends beyond economics, as both countries have engaged in educational and cultural initiatives, strengthening the ties between the two peoples.

As South Korea’s “New Southern Policy” and Pakistan’s “Engage East” strategy converge, this partnership is set to become even more pivotal, not only for the countries involved but also for the broader Asia-Pacific region. The Pakistan-ROK relationship, founded on shared values and aspirations, exemplifies the potential of international collaboration.

The opening ceremony will feature a keynote address by Muhammad Ali, Federal Minister of Energy, Power & Petroleum and it will include welcome remarks by Ambassador Park Kijun, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea, and welcome remarks by Ambassador Sohail Mahmood, DG ISSI.

During the two working sessions, distinguished speakers will give retrospective reflections f the historical relationship, and experts from both countries will share their insights on the historical journey of relations between South Korea and Pakistan. Dr. Talat Shabbir will moderate the seminar.
