Pakistan reports two coronavirus deaths; toll of infections rise to 307

PESHAWAR: Pakistan reported two deaths of COVID-19 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, while death of a 90 year old in Gilgit Baltistan was not due to Coronavirus and the infections took the toll to 307 rounf the country.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) reported Pakistan’s first two deaths from the novel coronavirus, as according to KP Health Minister one of the patients, a 36-year-old resident of Hangu, being treated at LRH Peshawar has passed away.

Second victim of coronavirus, 50-year-old Sadaat Khan, who was receiving treatment at Mardan Medical Complex (MMC) passed away. The patient had returned from Saudi Arabia a week ago.

Meanwhile, Director of Mardan Hospital Dr Javed Iqbal also confirmed that a coronavirus patient named Saadat Khan has passed away.

The coronavirus cases in Pakistan have surged to 288 as 208 patients have been tested positive for the epidemic in Sindh, 28 in Punjab, 19 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 16 in Balochistan, four in Islamabad and 13 in Gilgit-Baltistan, Dunya News reported.

Death of suspected patient not due to coronavirus: Gilgit-Baltistan govt, according to spokesperson of Gilgit-Baltistan government Faizullah Firaq said that death of a 90-year-old man who passed away was not due to coronavirus.

Faizullah Firaq said that government has received the individual’s test reports and cause of his death was pneumonia not COVID19.

Gilgit-Baltistan Chief Minister Hafeezur Rehman has confirmed 10 new coronaviurs cases in the region among pilgrims who returned from Iran. Gilgit-Baltistan has reported 13 total cases.

Punjab Chief Minister Usman Buzdar confirmed 28 cases and announced Rs 5billion fund to combat coronavirus.

Talking to media in Lahore, CM Buzdar said that as many as 28 people have been tested positive for the COVID-19 in Punjab, while there are 189 suspected cases of the virus.

Buzdar said that the provincial government has allocated funds worth Rs5 billion in order to curtail the risk of the spread of Coronavirus (COVID-19).

Sindh government spokesman and advisor on law and environment Barrister Murtaza Wahab has requested the people to stay at home for fourteen days.

During a press conference held in Karachi, Barrister Murtaza Wahab asked people to self-quarantine for 14 days for the prevention from deadly coronavirus in the province. If you want to help the government, just quarantine yourself instead of going on vacations, he asked.

Earlier Sindh government spokesman and advisor on law and environment Barrister Murtaza Wahab on Wednesday has said that the number of coronavirus cases in Sindh has escalated to 181 while two patients have also been discharged from the hospital after full recovery.

Government postpones all examinations till June 1 due to Coronavirus

ISLAMABAD: Government on Wednesday postponed all examinations including those of boards and the Cambridge system till June 1, due to the situation emerged after coronavirus.

Addressing a news conference in Islamabad, Minister for Education Shafqat Mahmood announced that the foreign institutions, as well as domestic boards, are bound to implement the government’s decisions. He said if the situation improves, the examination boards may conduct the postponed exams between 1st June and 15th July.

All schools including public, private as well as seminaries have been closed till 5th of next month as per the decision of the National Security Committee. He said it will be decided on the 27th March whether or not the educational institutions are reopened.

Shafqat Mahmood said arrangements are also being made to engage the students in their homes through online lectures in case if the schools are further closed. In this regard technology support and content, committees have also been set up.

“Federal government is working in cohesion with the provinces to take all possible measures to contain the spread of coronavirus,” he added.

It may be noted that the National Security Committee (NSC) which met with Prime Minister Imran Khan in the chair in Islamabad last week decided to keep all educational institutions closed across the country till April 5 to combat the coronavirus outbreak.

Taking to Twitter shortly after the meeting, Federal Minister for Education Shafqat Mahmood said: “In a meeting of the National Security Committee presided over PM Imran Khan, it has been decided to close all educational institutions in the country till April 5.”

“This includes all schools and universities, public and private, vocational institutions and madaris.”

Accountability Court rejects acquittal pleas of Pervaiz Ashraf, other suspects in Nandipur reference

ISLAMABAD: Accountability court in Islamabad has on Wednesday rejected the acquittal pleas of former prime minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf and other suspects in the Nandipur reference.

Accountability Court Judge Azam Khan conducted the hearing and turned down the petitions of the erstwhile premier, Shumaila Mehmood, Riaz Kiyani and Masood Chishti under the National Accountability (Amendment) Ordinance.

The accountability court ordered to continue the trial while remarking that the accused do not deserve to get any relief under the NAB (Amendment) Ordinance. The NAB had also opposed to approve the acquittal pleas of the suspects.

It is pertinent here to mention that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Babar Awan was acquitted in the case before the approval of the NAB (Amendment) Ordinance.

The reference was filed after the national exchequer suffered loss worth billions of rupees due to delay in the Nandipur Power Project.

Government extending cooperation to all provinces to deal coronavirus: Sania Nishtar

ISLAMABAD: Government is extending its all-out cooperation with the all four provinces to deal coronavirus pandemic, said Dr. Sania Nishtar, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Social Protection and Poverty Alleviation on Tuesday.

Speaking in a special program of state broadcasting in Islamabad, she said coronavirus is a new virus and its incubation period is fourteen days. She said hand washing for at least thirty to forty seconds is essential to cope with the virus.

She said there is also need to avoid touching hands with eyes, mouth and nose, shaking hands and hugging. She said we should keep distance of about three feet while interacting with each other and use hand sanitizers. She said the people who are suffering from coronavirus and those who are looking after them are required to wear mask.

Dr. Sania Nishtar said the government has allocated the airports of Lahore, Karachi and Islamabad for the international flights and quarantine arrangements have been made across the land border points to tackle coronavirus. She said if anyone suspects symptoms, including fever, coughing or shortness of breath he or she must call the official helpline number (1166). She said the chances of complications from coronavirus exist in aged people, children with malnutrition and those having weak immune system.

Dr. Sania Nishtar said many companies are conducting research on coronavirus vaccine. She expressed the hope that medicine and vaccine of the coronavirus will be found out by the end of this year.

The Special Assistant advised general public to strictly follow the preventive measures being communicated by the government to stay safe from the coronavirus.

She said we will come out of this pandemic very soon with firm solidarity and adopting the precautionary measures.

COVID-19 takes toll of infections to 106 in Pakistan, Sindh 88

ISLAMABAD: COVID-19 took toll of positive confirmed infections in Pakistan to 106 as of Monday after more than two dozen new cases were reported in Sindh.

The Sindh health department has confirmed that the number of positive coronavirus cases in the province has reached 88 as of Monday evening.

Of these positive cases, 27 are from Karachi, one is from Hyderabad and 61 are from Taftan, Iran. Two people have recovered and 85 are under treatment. This brings Pakistan’s coronavirus case count to 106 in total.

Sindh CM Murad Ali Shah, in a press conference, said that 23 more people were screened at the Aga Khan University Hospital Monday afternoon, of which 11 people have tested positive for coronavirus. The results of others have yet to be revealed.

The Sindh health department has quarantined pilgrims who arrived in Pakistan via the Taftan border and is testing them.

On Sunday Punjab had reported its first case, while the Sindh government had reported 18 new cases (13 from Sukkur and five from Karachi). One new case was also reported from Islamabad.

Globally, 158 countries have been affected, more than 6,500 people have died and more than 170,000 infected by the disease called ‘COVID-19’ as it spreads rapidly to new territories.

The epicentre of the outbreak has now shifted to Europe, which is recording a rapid rise in new cases every day.

Eight children abused every day in Pakistan in 2019: report

ISLAMABAD: Eight children were sexually abused every day in Pakistan in 2019, according to a new report, which shows a 25 per cent decrease from the previous year.

In 2019, a total of 2,846 cases of child abuse were reported from all four provinces of Pakistan, as well as Islamabad, Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit Baltistan, as per Sahil, an Islamabad-based NGO working for child protection.

The report stated that daily eight children in Pakistan were sexually abused. Of the total, 778 were abductions, 405 children went missing, 384 were cases of sodomy, 279 of rape, 210 of attempted rape, 205 of gang sodomy cases and 115 of gang rape, the data showed, Geo News Reported.

In addition, 104 child marriage cases were also reported from across the country.

Majority of the victims, 54 per cent, were girls, while 46 per cent were boys. The most vulnerable age group was between six-15 years. Although children as young as 0-5 years were also sexually abused, stated the report.

There were at least 70 cases identified related to pornography.

In 2018, a total of 3,832 cases of child abuse were reported by Sahil in Pakistan.

Coronavirus infections toll reaches 38 with new Karachi, Islamabad cases

ISLAMABAD: Coronavirus infected persons toll reaches 38 with new cases were reported in Karachi and Islamabad on Sunday.

According to details, four new infection cases of COVID-19 have been reported in Karachi and one in Islamabad, taking the country’s count to 38.

Three patients returned from Saudi Arabia a few days ago and tested positive for the virus in Karachi on Sunday. The fourth patient has no recent travel history.

Of the 21 cases in Sindh, two have recovered and been discharged and 19 are under treatment.

A case was also reported in Islamabad. PIMS spokesperson Dr Waseem Khawaja confirmed the case and said the man was the husband of an already confirmed case. The woman is on the ventilator.

Coronavirus outbreak: number of infections in Pakistan reach to 34

ISLAMABAD: Coronavirus outbreak is on rise in Pakistan as the number of confirmed cases of infections with the deadly virus in Pakistan has risen to 34 as of Sunday after more new cases were reported from Islamabad and Karachi.

Another coronavirus case has been confirmed in Islamabad on Sunday.

According to Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims) spokesperson Dr Waseem Khawaja, the newly confirmed patient was the husband of a woman who was confirmed to have the virus on Saturday. She had arrived in the capital from the United States and was brought to Pims two days prior. Khwaja said both husband and wife are admitted in the hospital’s isolation ward.

Karachi has been the worst affected city so far, with 17 of the total confirmed cases. Of the remaining, five cases have been reported in Gilgit-Baltistan and one case has been reported each in Hyderabad and Quetta. Seven other cases were reported at the Taftan border on Friday.

Globally, more than 5,800 people have died and more than 156,000 have been infected by COVID-19 as the disease spreads rapidly in new territories.

The epicentre of the outbreak has now shifted to Europe, which is recording a rapid rise in new cases every day.

POs among 56 outlaws held, arms, other valuables recover in Faisalabad

FAISALABAD: The police arrested 56 outlaws including proclaimed offenders (POs), drug pushers and gamblers, recovered arms, narcotics, stake money and other valuables during separate actions across the district on Saturday.

According to details, the police teams belonging to different police stations of Faisalabad launched crackdown against criminals in jurisdiction of respective police stations.

During various actions, the police arrested 56 outlaws including 11 POs, seven gamblers and drug peddlers.

The police recovered 11 pistols, two rifles, hundreds of rounds of different bores, Rs16,190 stake money and other valuables from possession of the detainees.

The police confiscated recovered arms, drugs, other valuables and after registering separate cases against the detainees at concerned police stations have started investigation.

Sihala police arrested accused Muhammad Arshad and recovered 1.33 gram hashish from him. Shehzad Town police arrested accused 03 accused namely Waqas, Ahmed Khan and Zeeshan.

Bhara Kahu police arrested accused Zahid Islam and recovered one Kalashnikov from him while police also arrested 12 persons involved in immoral activities. They were identified as Muhammad Aamir, Zulfqar Iqbal, Zeshan Kareem, Noman, Zeeshan Tariq and Rukhshanda Bibi, Sania , Tania, Sameena Bibi, Yasmeen, Saba bibi, and Shahmila Bibi.

Two more coronavirus cases emerge in Pakistan, tally jumps to 30

KARACHI/ISLAMABAD: Two more persons have tested positive for novel coronavirus (COVID-19), authorities confirmed on Saturday.

As per details, the first was reported from Islamabad, while the second case detected in Sindh.

According to Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) officials, a 30-year-old woman has been tested positive for coronavirus on Saturday. The patient from the capital had travelled from the US to Pakistan a few days ago.

The officials further added that the woman’s condition was critical and she had been placed on a ventilator.

Meanwhile, the second coronavirus case was reported in Karachi.

According to the Sindh Health Department, the patient arrived from Saudi Arab a few days back and was tested positive today.
