ISLAMABAD: Journalists, educationists and people from literary circle gathered in a large number at the National Press Club (NPC) to commemorate Tariq Mehmood Malik, a dedicated journalist, selfless educationist, an architect and above all an excellent human being on his second death anniversary.
Besides others his daughter Marium Tariq came on stage to pay glowing tributes to her father and expressed resolve to follow the footprints of her father.
Maryam is a student of National University Modern Language (NUML) where her beloved father had been teaching for two decades. He had been helping his students in and outside the campus to polish their career. Being an educationalist and a working journalist Tariq helped dozens of students begin professional life in media industry.
Maryam in her emotional but composed speech shared the audience how her father supported his family and people of his native area Talagang, Chakwal to get better education, jobs and to ensure better medical treatment. Despite his very tight schedule that used to start 7 am in the morning and concluded after late in the night he was there for serve any one who approached him.
She said their father never shared his financial worries was jobless for months several times his over two decades career in media. They would come to know later on when he got job in another organization. “I have been hearing from his friends how many times he was in financial crisis. For me he always provided him whatever I wished for” Marium said quoting several examples.
She recalled the last day she saw her father when he was taken to hospital by his close friends Irfan Ghauri and Dr Atif Iftikhar in the emergency after he developed severe breathing issues due to Covid. He said still full of valor and courage and advised his children to remain positive and help everyone around them.
Tariq’s friends from media industry, academia and his personal life shared their memories with him. In the function that continued for more than three hours everyone was keen to share incidents where Tariq was helpful for them.
Prominent among the speakers were Haji Nawaz Raza former President of NPC, Anwar Raza incumbent President NPC, Wadood Qureshi, Sajjad Lakha, Irfan Ghauri Editor The News Today, senior journalists Mohsin Raza Khan, Rana Qaisar, Mateen Haider, Javed Soomro, Faiz Paracha, Matiullah Jan, Azam Khan, Qamar Zaman, Chaudhry Shahzad, Hasnaat Malik, friends of Tariq from different walks of life and his cousin Aslam Malik.
Dr. Mudassir Mukhtar, Dr Atif Iftikhar and Dr. Atif Sahi represented academia.
The participants talked about professional and personal life of Tariq Mehmood Malik. Most people know Tariq as a reporter, who served in almost all the prominent media houses. Many knew him as an educationist who started his career as a school teacher in Talagang. Some knew his excellent skills as an architect.
But everyone was witness to beauty of his character; always supportive to people around him in every sphere of his life as school teacher, as lecturer in prestigious varsity, as reporter in both print and electronic media.
In a chilling cold night of December 17, 2020, Tariq succumbed to first wave of Coronavirus after remaining on ventilator for around two weeks. He not only left his own three children orphaned but a large number of his friends in an eternal shock.
Many at the event said Tariq was the first one they used to call when they needed an advice. In fact Tariq has never left them as he is still alive in their hearts and thoughts, they added. His love, his affection, his mentorship will live with us always.
