Opposition parties in Pakistan have united against the PTI-led government and plan to launch a movement against the government.
On 20 September 2020 two major political parties of Pakistan, Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and Pakistan Muslim League (N) along with other small parties held a meeting in Islamabad.
Former president Asif Ali Zardari and Ex-Prime Minister Mian Nawaz Sharif addressed the meeting through the video link.
The political parties presented a 26-point agenda and all participating parties agreed to launch a political campaign against the PTI-led government.
They stated that the current government is not elected but selected and failed to govern effectively. They also criticized the ongoing accountability process in the country and called it “one-sided and planned against opposition”.
The former three time Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif addressed the meeting and the speech is being discussed in various circles largely. Nawaz Sharif directly criticized the national security institutions. He stated that now we have a state above the state.
But the question is that, why it was necessary for the opposition to convene an all-parties conference at that time? Faith Baldwin (an American author) said that, “Time is a dressmaker specializing in alterations”. We need to assess the motives behind the convening of the All Parties Conference at that time.
The Government wants reverse the 18th amendment. The major political parties have reservations about it. There is also talk of changing the governing system in the country, whether it is a presidential system or a parliamentary system.
In addition, Senate elections are going to be held in March 2021. Therefore, the opposition parties want to start a political movement before the senate elections. But the biggest reason behind this is, “accountability”.
Leaders of opposition parties are currently facing cases in the NAB. The 90-day accountability process was about to begin. The court had ordered that all major cases be completed within 90 days. Therefore, the opposition wants a tough time for the government. So that the process of accountability that is going to take place can be made controversial.
After the All Parties Conference, Federal Minister for Railways and a key ally of PTI government Sheikh Rashid Ahmed unveiled another secret. Sheikh Rasheed said that, the parliamentary leaders and the leader of the opposition met the Army Chief a few days ago at GHQ where the head of ISI Gen Faiz was also present.
The purpose of the meeting to discuss the special status of Gilgit-Baltistan. Pakistan and China wants to Gilgit-Baltistan to be a separate province. The current political situation in the country was also discussed during the meeting.
The Army Chief made it very clear that the Army had not interested in politics.
After this secret meeting came to light, a new conversation has started in the country. Former Prime Minister Mian Nawaz Sharif’s speech at the APC gives the impression that he was not aware of the meeting. In addition, Maryam Nawaz’s recent statement in which she said that she did not know about the meeting and no representative of Nawaz Sharif was present in this meeting.
The question is that, why did the parliamentary leaders keep this meeting secret? Is there any party within party? Is this meeting being kept secret and someone is being put up against the wall?
Given the current political scenario in the country, it would be premature to say anything. But if we look at the past political history of the country, we will know that whenever such secret meetings have taken place there has been a change in the politics of the country. It remains to be seen what will change next?
