The Time Delusion

“Sometimes you will never know the value of a moment until it becomes a memory,” says Theodore Seuss Geisel.

Everyone must’ve heard that time is money, indeed it is. The more we spend it with our loved ones, the more memories we create of a lifetime which keeps us going for the rest of our lives. Most of the people think of time as a slippery rope which is difficult to hold on to. But in my opinion, we can hold it only if we are willing to.

We, as humans, often wish to go back in time to fix our mistakes so that everything bad happening at the moment will not occur. But there is no time machine, no secret cave, which lead us back in time and certainly, no clock which can turn the time back to its previous state.

I recently watched a Netflix series called Dark. In that series, the main characters kept traveling back and forth in time to fix their mistakes but as the series continued, they found out that nothing could be changed. No matter how hard they tried, the world kept on repeating the course which had occurred before.

Time cannot be altered but the most successful person is the one who takes time on his side. We all should know that time will go on and it will not wait for anyone. So, we should be confident enough to face time, as it heals every wound. However, time leaves scars, but that doesn’t hurt anymore.

Even if we go into the past and fix our mistakes, that will too only result in devastating our present time and impact it negatively where possibly, we tend to lose our precious people and things. There are certain tragedies in life which bring us where we stand right now. We learn from our mistakes, and if those mistakes do not happen, no human would be successful. Sometimes, ‘fall’ is necessary for people to rise again on their feet again.

There is a quote by Pericles which says, “Time is the wisest counselor of all”. In this quote, Pericles tried to convey his idea that, don’t rush into situations. Time will teach us everything. The best way to learn is to wait and let time take over. As we go on with life, we will see how much time has taught us. With every passing second, every minute and every hour, we learn what time is capable of and how much time affects our life.

We all have the same mindset in which we assume, “Why does everything bad happen to me only?” Instead of thinking negatively, we should believe that everything happens for a reason as Allah is the best of planners. It is mentioned in the Quran, “Verily, with hardship comes ease”. To further elaborate, it means that with every difficulty or with every tragedy, He blesses us with not one but many rewards. It is up to us if we focus on the hardship or the giving. With time, Allah blesses us with much more than we can imagine.

Benjamin Franklin once said that, “Lost time is never found again”. We seem to take certain people and opportunities for granted. When the opportunity is lost, or the people are gone, we tend to regret our actions and start behaving opposite to the nature. But, the time has passed long till then and there is no point to wish for the past to change.

Time has taught me so much. It has taught me never to take people for granted as no one knows how long they’ll stay in our lives. Time has also taught me to take risks every once a while as life is only a one-way ticket. It is up to us to treasure the temporary journey of this world or to spend this ticket while complaining about the thorns in our path and tossing away the valuable opportunities.
