PESHAWAR: Three policemen, who were providing security to an anti-polio vaccination team, were wounded after unknown assailants targeted them in Musa Zai area of Dera Ismail Khan.
A team of policemen were escorting the vaccinators when assailants opened fired and hurled grenades, leaving three of the security officials injured. The wounded officials have ben shifted to the hospital for treatment while a search operation has also been launched in the area.
A day earlier, an armed attack was also carried out against vaccinators and police officials in Madinah Colony area of DI Khan. However, all the official remained unhurt in the attack.
The first anti-polio campaign of 2023 was started on Monday in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to vaccinate 7.2 million children in the first phase.
In 2022, Pakistan reported 20 polio cases and all were belonged to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Seven policemen and about as many health workers lost their lives in armed attacks during the year.
