UK PM Says Iran Had ‘Strong Indications’ of Role in RAF Fairford Incident

LONDON: British Prime Minister Andy Burnham on Wednesday said there were “strong indications” Iran was involved in suspicious activity at a UK airbase that triggered a major security incident this weekend.

While speaking to BBC, he said: “There are strong indications that Iran played a part in what happened over the weekend at RAF Fairford.”

He did not provide further details. Tehran has strongly denied any involvement.

Mr. Burnham had publicly urged people not to speculate about their motive or connections to other countries in the hours after the men were arrested.

The five men, who are British citizens, were released on bail on Monday. The authorities said on Tuesday that they had found no explosives in the vans, only an unspecified quantity of gasoline.

Speaking at the White House on Monday, Trump said: “I will tell you, I would have said, ‘don’t let them have bail’. I’m surprised that they released them. I wouldn’t have done that.”

But Burnham said: “I think people need to understand that when it says released – that isn’t as people might think. It’s obviously with the strictest possible bail conditions.

Meanwhile, the Iranian Embassy in Britain on Monday issued a statement rejecting any suggestion that its government was involved in the events at the British base.
