UNGA passes resolution against Israeli occupation in Palestine; 87 votes cast in favor

NEW YORK: A resolution against Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories was passed by a majority vote in the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) with a wide margin.

According to Palestinian media 87 votes were cast in favor and 26 against the resolution in the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) while 53 countries abstained from voting.

Pakistan, United Arab Emirates, Russia, China and other Muslim countries voted in favor of the resolution while Israel, United States, Britain and other European countries voted against the resolution.

India, France and Japan were among the countries who abstained from participate in the voting.

Even though the UN Security Council (UNSC) with its veto procedure is the most powerful body in the UN system, the UNGA represents global opinion more effectively.

Israel had captured Jerusalem in the 1967 Arab-Israeli war.

The resolution has urged the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to comment on the legal consequences of the violation of the Palestinian people s right to self-determination by Israeli occupation, settlement and invasion of Palestinian lands.
