US Reduces Pakistan’s Tariff From 29% To 19%

WASHINGTON: The United States (US) in a sweeping move has reduced the the general tariff o Pakistan from 29% tp 19 per cent while on the other hand the tariff of Indian was kept at 25 per cent.

The United States has imposed import tariffs on 69 countries, effective immediately, following the expiration of trade agreement deadlines.

According to the White House spokesperson, President Donald Trump has signed an executive order to implement the new tariffs.

Under the revised tariff structure, Bangladesh faces a 20 per cent tariff, Türkiye 15 per cent, while tariffs on Canada have been increased from 25 per cent to 35 per cent. A final decision on tariffs for China is still under consideration.

Just a day earlier, the US had imposed a 25 per cent tariff on India.

Senior American officials stated that the differences with India are not just trade-related but also geopolitical, involving the BRICS alliance and India’s ties with Russia. According to the officials, such disputes cannot be resolved overnight.

According to the White House directive, Pakistan’s tariff has been revised down from 29 per cent to 19 per cent after a last-minute trade agreement reached yesterday. However, countries failing to finalize trade deals within the next seven days may face further tariff hikes.

The highest tariffs were imposed on Brazil at 50 per cent and Switzerland at 39 per cent. Canada faces a 35 per cent tariff, while a 25 per cent rate has been applied to India. Bangladesh and Türkiye have also been included in the revised list, facing 20 per cent and 15 per cent tariffs respectively.

Meanwhile, negotiations with China are still ongoing, and no final tariff decision has been announced for the country yet.

Senior US officials noted that tensions with India are not solely commercial but also geopolitical, driven by India’s involvement in the BRICS alliance and its growing ties with Russia. Officials said such complex disputes cannot be resolved overnight.
