DADYAL: Government of Azad Jammu Kashmir would organize a tourist gala on Sunday at historic Ramkot Fort, located on the summit of a hill whose three sides are surrounded by the Jehlum River.
According to Sarar Zeeshan, Assistant Commissioner in Dadyal, of District Mirpur the event is being organized on World Tourism Day 27th September to highlight tourism potential of Azad Kashmir.
Ramkot is an ancient fort built over the site of an old Hindu Shiva temple. Located on the summit of a hill, surrounded by river on three sides, makes this fort one of the most magnificent scenic places of AJK.
Local administration claims that the fort was built in 1186 by Ghias ud Din Muhammad a Ghurid dynasty Sultan of sub-continent. Later Muslims rulers of Kashmir fortified to safeguard their territory. Fort was used for surveillance by sitting atop of the river Jehlum and Poonch. The Sikh Maharaja of Kashmir further strengthened the fort.
Fort is located opposite side from Mirpur and one has to cross Mangla Lake on boat to reach there. The fort is accessible through Siakh village from Dadyal side as well as and from Mangla side.
Ten minutes travel by road from Mirpur city leads Mangla resort where boats are available from Army sports club to access Ramkot Fort on the bank of Jehlum river which falls into huge water reservoir called Mangla Dam.
Local administration in Dadyal-tehsil has invited people of Pakistan and abroad to take part in the event and enjoy the scenic beauty and history of the area.
