KARACHI: Iqra University Karachi has decided to start online classes for its students from Monday (March 16), to save academic loss they could suffer due to closure of educational institutes in the wake of Coronavirus pandemic.
The management of the university, in a letter asked the students to cooperate and support the move taken in an extraordinary situation.
According to a notification by Sindh government, all the educational institutions in the province will remain closed till June 1st.
The National Security Committee (NSC), the apex committee of the country on issues of national security, on Friday decided to take a number of steps to contain spread of coronavirus in the country, including closing the border with Iran and Afghanistan and banning all large public gatherings.
It was decided to close all educational institutions in the country for three weeks, throughout the country. The provincial governments are taking measures as per emerging situation.
It was decided during the meeting that only three airports in the country — Karachi, Islamabad and Lahore — will be allowed to operate international flights, a move intended to reduce the entry points and ensure better arrangements there.
With another coronavirus case confirmed in Islamabad, total confirmed cases of infected people in the country has risen to 34 as of Sunday morning.
It will probably be the first such experience in Pakistan that a university will be conducting its regular classes online at such a large scale.
Below is text of the letter the management of IU has written to the students.
‘’Dear Students,
Hope you are doing well.
As you know that we are all going through testing times because of the outbreak of Coronavirus. The World Health Organization has called this outbreak a pandemic and an international health emergency has been declared.
This means that all of us have to take strict and vigilant measures to combat the disease. The management, faculty and staff of Iqra University is fully aware of the gravity of the situation and we have been constantly thinking of active ways to ward off the disease and at the same time continue with the teaching-learning process.
In order to refrain from any more academic loss to the students, we are commencing online classes for all the students of IU from March 16, 2020.
As this will be our first initiative to shift to the online mode at a mass level, we may face a few technical challenges. We request you to bear with us in the wake of any technical and operational difficulty.
With your cooperation and support, we are sure that we will not only overcome this extraordinary situation but also smoothly run the academic process.
TOGETHER WE CAN DO IT’’
