
Sebastien Lorion, the First Secretary delegation of the European Union to Pakistan, embarked on a captivating journey through South Punjab, accompanied by his mother, to delve into the rich culture of the region.
Guiding them through this immersive experience was Dr. Moazzam Khan Durrani, a distinguished faculty member of the Department of Anthropology at The Islamia University of Bahawalpur. Dr. Durrani, renowned for his expertise in regional culture, facilitated cultural walks, utilizing the facilities of PTDC and the District Government to ensure a memorable and insightful trip for the dignitaries.
Their first day commenced in Multan, where Mr. Lorion explored the mystical shrines of Baha-Ud Din Zikriya, Sha Rukn-e-Alam, and Sha Shamas Tabraiz Sabzwari. Additionally, he visited the historic Khudaka Masjid at Mohla Afghanan, Multan, a testament to the region’s rich heritage. The day culminated with a delectable taste of Afghan cuisine at a local restaurant on Abdali Road.
The following day was dedicated to further exploration, with visits to Dera Nawab Sahib (Sadiq Garh Palace), the majestic Desert (Derawer), and the ancient city of Uch. In Uch, Mr. Lorion immersed himself in history, visiting revered sites such as Jalal U Din Surkh Posh Bukhari, Darbar Bibi Jiwandi, and Darbar Musa Pak. However, concerns arose regarding the preservation of national heritage, particularly during the visit to Sadiq Garh Palace.
Undeterred, the journey continued to Drawer, the Jewel of Cholistan, where Mr. Lorion marveled at the beauty of the desert landscape. Despite recent renovations by the Department of Archaeology in Punjab, he recognized the need for further preservation efforts.
Dr. Durrani provided invaluable insights into Abbasid Dynasty history and arranged a poignant visit to Sir Sadiq Muhmmad Khan V’s grave at the Royal Graveyard. The evening was spent exploring contemporary society, offering a glimpse into desert life through interactions with locals.
Their cultural odyssey concluded with a visit to Noor Mahal, where Dr. Durrani showcased his contributions to the museum’s development and highlighted the role of the Pakistan Army in heritage conservation. The significance of maritime history was underscored through a visit to the Indus Queen replica, followed by a mesmerizing experience of laser lights and a sound show.
The next day commenced with an academic tour of The Islamia University of Bahawalpur, where Mr. Lorion learned about the university’s solar power capacity and admired student theses at the University College of Art and Design. A drive-through tour provided insights into various university facilities and projects, expertly guided by Dr. Durrani.
Their educational journey continued at The Bahawalpur Museum, where Mr. Lorion gained a deeper understanding of the region’s ethnology. Despite the closure of Sadiq Reading Library, Mr. Lorion marveled at its architectural splendor, concluding a truly enriching experience of South Punjab’s culture and heritage.
Through this diplomatic venture, Mr. Lorion and his delegation forged meaningful connections with the heart and soul of South Punjab, leaving an indelible mark on their journey of cultural discovery.
Later in the day, a visit to Jamia Masjid Al Sadiq Bahawalpur offered insights into architectural marvels and self-sustaining economic models, leaving Mr. Lorion impressed. His exploration continued with a visit to the world-famous Blue Pottery of Multan, concluding an enriching third day.
During casual discussions throughout the trip, Mr. Lorion expressed the EU’s interest in collaborations advancing energy, law and order, small businesses, women’s empowerment, and culture, highlighting the region’s potential for international partnerships and growth.
