KARACHI: In a significant political development, former Prime Minister of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Sardar Tanveer Ilyas has officially joined the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP).
The announcement came after a high-profile meeting on Monday between Sardar Tanveer Ilyas and Faryal Talpur, President of the PPP Women’s Wing, at Zardari House in Karachi. The meeting was also attended by Punjab Governor Baligh Ur Rehman, Senator Saleem Mandviwalla, Zia Lanjar, and other senior party leaders.
A spokesperson for Zardari House confirmed that alongside Sardar Tanveer Ilyas, Ali Shan Soni and Ahmed Saghir, both prominent political figures, have also joined the PPP.
Support for Kashmir Cause
Speaking at the occasion, Sardar Tanveer Ilyas praised the PPP for its “unwavering commitment to the Kashmir cause,” calling the party’s efforts “unparalleled” in advocating for the rights and freedom of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
Faryal Talpur welcomed the new members, describing their inclusion as a strategic strengthening of the party’s vision for AJK and beyond.
“When Bilawal Bhutto Zardari becomes Prime Minister, Azad Kashmir will witness unprecedented development, and the dream of freedom for Occupied Kashmir will move closer to reality,” she said.
Strategic Gain for PPP
The move is being seen as a strategic political gain for the PPP, which has been actively working to expand its influence in Azad Kashmir as well as in national politics ahead of upcoming elections.
Sardar Tanveer Ilyas brings with him administrative experience, political capital, and grassroots support—especially in AJK’s urban constituencies. (With input from INP)
